Young Hearts for Life Cardiac Screening - Thursday, April 14th
Young Hearts for Life® (YH4L) is offering free ECG heart screenings to all Hinsdale South HS students on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. A parent/guardian must provide consent for a student to participate.
YH4L is the largest ECG screening program in the U.S. and helps identify young people (ages 12-24) at risk for Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Sadly, over 60 young adults die each week from Sudden Cardiac Death in the U.S. Since 2006, YH4L has screened more than 350,000 students, finding over 3,600 with previously undiagnosed heart conditions. Repeat screening is recommended every two years.
Why This Matters - An ECG can detect about 70% of heart conditions linked to SCA, compared to just 4% detection through pre-participation physicals. - SCA is the #1 cause of death among young adult athletes. - The ECG is quick, painless, and non-invasive.
What to Expect - Trained volunteers will place ECG stickers on the student’s chest, ankles, and wrists. - Clothing stays on. No blood is drawn. - The ECG records heart activity and creates a printed record for the on-site cardiologist to review. - Results will be available 2-3 weeks after the screening via a secure link sent to parent/guardian email. - Results are confidential and not shared with the student, school, or any outside parties. - Additional evaluation and testing by your physician may be recommended.
Cost The screening is completely free thanks to the just1mike and Mend A Heart Foundations and YH4L donors.
