Special Olympics Summer Games is quickly approaching. The state tournament will be held the weekend of June 7-9th at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal. This year Hinsdale South had athletes qualify to attend the Summer Games in three sports: swimming, track & field, and soccer. Schedules have not been released yet for specific dates/times.
In March the Hinsdale South Special Olympics swimmers attended the Regional competition at Metea Valley high school. They had 6 swimmers qualify to attend the State games by winning 1st place in one or more of their events. Three athletes have chosen to attend the state meet. Charlie Nilles qualified in both of his events, Bartu Ural and Rokas Morekevicius qualified in one event but will be swimming in two events that weekend. They will be coached by Beth Walker and assisted by Alex Tomanovich.
In April the Special Olympics track & field athletes competed in a two day Regional competition at Marmion Academy. They had 6 athletes qualify to attend the State games in June. Three of these athletes will be going to participate in the Track & field events. Jayden Prodzenski qualified in one event but will be competing in two events, Mika Saloman and Matthew Schultze both qualified in one event and will be competing in that one event only. They will be coached by Nicole Carpenter and Stephanie Gibson, with Kathy Craig as their assistant/interpreter.
The Hinsdale South Special Olympics soccer team hosted the Region C Regional competition here at Hinsdale South. The 11 person soccer team took first place by winning both of their games beating PAEC Proviso 8-0 and Thornton High School 3-0. They are hoping to continue their state winning streak competing at the Summer Games in June. There are 7 athletes that have chosen to attend: Chancey Evers, Eddie Holt, Abbey McCurry, Osmar Segura, Celzo Esquivel, Colin Nolan, and Loues Padilla. Adan Contreras will be coaching the team along with Danika Duvall as the interpreter.
