Varsity Varsity Hornets lost 2 tough matches during the week. The Hornets lost to their cross town rival central on Wednesday. Despite the loss, the girls were able to raise over $1000.00 for the cystic fibrosis foundation (which what the match was all about J) Over the weekend the Hornets picked up another win after a few losses in their final tournament of the 2015 season. On Friday evening the Hornets took Edwardsville to three but could not close it out. On Saturday they picked up a win versus Lake Zurich. The hornets start post season play on Monday.
Sophomore In our final week of play we couldn't have asked for a stronger finish. Excellent serving and a well paced offense helped us rocket past Willowbrook 25-6, 25-20.
Then later in the week, we played rivals Hinsdale Central. Mia Sannasardo had a stand out performance both serving and in serve receive starting off game one with 10-0 run, eventually winning the match 25-8, 25-14.
At the St. Charles East invite, we lost two close matches in pool play, splitting with glenbard south (21-25, 25-23) and losing to glenbard west (26-27, 22-25). Then in the crossover match the girls ran out of juice and fell 17-25, 21-25 to a physical York team.
Freshman A The girls freshman A volleyball team wrapped up their season with two tough games this week. Tuesday we faced the last competitor in the west suburban gold conference Willowbrook. In the first game the hornets started off strong and did not look back winning with a score of 25-15. In the second game a hornets team that was already short one setter due to illness had injuries to another two players. Everyone rallied and fought their hardest through injures and pain to wrap up the second game 18-25. In the third game the hornets battled back and forth with Willowbrook and unfortunately fell 24-26 in a close competitive game. Jasmine Carlson racked up 9 kills and Kasey Hurley finished second in kills with 4. Megan Mihalkanin and Jasmine Carlson each contributed 4 aces as well to the match. Congratulations to the hornets for a hard fought game and mental toughness when facing adversity.
Wednesday the hornets took on Hinsdale Central in the last game of the season and in a cross-town rivalry battle. Both teams started out strong in the first game with back and forth play until the very end of the game, with communication errors at the end of the game the hornets fell 24-26. In the second game the hornets started off strong and took a commanding lead early on, they went on to win the game 25-15. In the third game of the match the hornets and devils battled again but the hornets were not able to overcome a point deficient and fell 20-25. Jena Suda led the hornets in kills with 5 while Jasmine Carlson contributed 4 kills and Clarissa Marron had 3 kills. Jasmine Carlson and Clarissa Marron also each had 2 great blocks during the match. Brigid LoConte led the team in Aces with 5 service aces in the hornets efforts.
Congratulations girls for a great season and good luck in your upcoming club tryouts. Freshman B The freshman girls ended their season with two losses. They learned a lot this season and improved immensely.
Week of October 12th
Varsity Hornets dropped two matches this week to leyden and a tough one to Downers Grove North. Unfortunately the girls lost another player to injury this past week but we are looking forward to being healthy and stronger once the play-offs arrive.This week we have our crosstown rival match versus Central, and after losing to them in 3 we are ready to avenge the loss.
JV The JV squad finished up their JV season with a great tournament in Libertyville, although they fell short at the end the JV hornets walked away with 3 place medals. Congrats to all the girls that played JV throughout the season on an awesome season!
Sophomore Tuesday's match against Leyden was a very messy match. Plagued with errors and miscommunication, we barely squeaked out a 20-25, 25-20, 25-17 win.
Thursday we faced a strong Downers Grove North squad. After losing the first set set 14-25, the girls made a late push in the second set off the strong serving of Donna Stevens unfortunately falling short 21-25.
In our last week of play we look to have a strong showing against Hinsdale Central and Willowbrook.
Freshman A This week freshman A volleyball had a busy week, Monday they hosted Normal Community high school. They fell in 2 close competitive games to Normal 22-25, 23-25. Megan Mihalkanin led the team in kills with 7 while Kasey Hurley and Clarissa Marron each contributed one block.
Tuesday the hornets traveled to Leyden high school for another conference matchup; they came out strong in the first game and were able to beat Leyden 25-17 and fought in the second game to win 26-24. Jasmine Carlson and Megan Mihalkanin each racked up 4 kills along with Clarissa Marron getting a solo block during the match.
Thursday Hinsdale South hosted the Trojans of Downers Grove North High School; the first match the Trojans and hornets battled back and forth but unfortunately strong serving late in the game gave the Trojans the win 25-21. During the second game the hornets struggled with communication and serve receive and fell 11-25. Saturday they traveled to West Chicago for their last freshman tournament of the season. In the first match the hornets lost in three to West Chicago 16-25, 25-18, 8-15. In their second match the hornets faced East Aurora and were able to capture an easy win 25-17, 25-5. In their third match of pool play they faced Morton and won 25-19 both games. In the last match of pool play the hornets faced Bolingbrook and came from behind to win the first game 25-22, and kept the momentum rolling winning the second game 25-17. In playoffs the hornets faced Batavia for third or fourth place overall in the tournament and fell in three games 9-25, 25-19, 25-17. Jasmine Carlson led in kills for the day with an impressive 22 kills, Kasey Hurley also contributed 10 kills in the hornet’s efforts. Brigid LoConte and Jasmine Carlson led the team with service aces each racking up 19 aces for the hornets. The team finished 4th overall out of 10 teams.
Freshman B This week we lost to Normal, Leyden and Downers’ grove high school. It was a tough week, but I would like to high light our outside hitters Zoee Williams and Kiley Long. Kiley came back from an injury this week, while she was out she came to every game and practice supporting her team. We are happy she is back. Zoee is working on never giving up and has set a goal of finishing off the season strong. She’s been working hard these last few practices and pushing her team to end the season on a high note.
Week of October 5th
Varsity The varsity hornets had a tough week. They defeated Morton during conference play but struggled this weekend at the Mizuno Cup. Although they competed hard they walked away with out a win over the weekend. They received consistent play from Sophomore Alyssa Errandi on Tuesday versus Morton. Also Senior Brittany West had a good weekend after coming back after a 4 week injury.
JV Another solid week of play for the JV team, they did struggle a bit at their home quad but the team was missing a few players that had been moved up to Varsity.
Sophomore Tuesday featured a resounding win against Morton 25-11 25-13, where strong defense and serving all around gave us a huge lead.
Wednesday against Neuqua gave us more to think about, however, after losing in three sets 19-25, 20-25, 15-25. Strong serving from setters Emma Axelrod and Donna Stevens helped keep us competitive against a very strong Neuqua squad. We look to regroup this week against Leyden and DGN.
Freshman A This week on Tuesday we traveled to Morton for another west suburban conference match up, we came out to an early lead in the first and were able to finish the first game 25-13, in the second game we started off where we left off with dominating serving and great communication winning the second game 25-13.
Wednesday we traveled to Nequa and faced a strong freshman team. In the first match we struggled with serve receive and fell 8-25, in the second match we turned the tables batting with Nequa back and forth and fell 23-25 in a close game.
Freshman B Freshman B played in two games this week and a tournament at York High school . They beat Morton and lost against Nequa Valley. Week of September 28th
Varsity Hornets lost a tough one to the York Dukes on Wednesday. The hornets are down three starters due to injury so other players have gotten opportunities to step in and fill big roles for the squad. We have a big week this week with matches versus Morton and Neuqua and also a huge tournament over the weekend.
JV Had a good week of play this week going 2-1 in their LT quad and 2-3 over the weekend. They have been facing some tough competition and have stepped up to the challenge. Although they do not practice together and they team is not always composed of the same players they have really had a good year Sophomore Last week was a tough week for us. The varsity and sophomore levels both are plagued with injuries forcing some players to be moved up to varsity. In a tough 19-25, 25-20, 21-25 loss to York, Tess Murray, normally an outside, did very well in the middle and had strong serving as usual.
Freshman A This week the freshman hosted the Dukes of York, in the first game hitting errors and serving errors gave the Dukes an early lead and the hornets fell 15-25. In the second game the hornets rallied to win 25-17 with impressive serves from Donye Neal and Brigid LoConte. During the third game the hornets struggled with serve receive and lost 12-25. The girls worked hard in practice this week and look forward to another conference game against Morton on Tuesday and Nequa on Wednesday.
Freshman B The girls took 3rd in their quad at LT this weekend. Our middles Nasheena James and Christina Prizgintas have really shined this week by blocking and hitting. They have improved immensely. We have a busy week coming up with two away games and a tournament at York high school scheduled.
Week of September 21st
Varsity The varsity girls volleyball team had another conference win this week versus proviso east. All players were able to contribute in the match which the hornets won 25-19 and 25-13.
JV Jv had an awesome weekend going 4-1 in their tournament. They were lead by alyssa Erandi and Tess Murray in the kill department and also had great defensive contributions from Sydney Benson and Mia Sanasardo! Middle Veronica Terrell also had a strong showing at the tournament.
Sophomore On Tuesday we played Proviso East and pulled out a 25-16, 25-5. After making 15 errors in the first set, our play was cleaned up considerably. Very strong serving from Emma Axelrod helped a clean second set. After a scattered week of practice we look to add two more wins this week! Freshman A This week the hornets took on Proviso East at home for their third conference match, they were victorious against the Pirates 25-10, 25-15. This brings their conference record to 2-1 in the west suburban gold freshman conference.
This weekend they traveled to Lockport for a competitive hosted by the porters. The hornets faced Mother McCauley in their first match of the day for pool play. They lost in two unfortunately with scores 21-25 and 14-25. In the second match of pool play the hornets faced Plainfield Central beating them easily 25-14, 25-12. In the last pool play match Hinsdale South played Joliet Central and split with them 21-25, 25-21. The hornets finished second in their pool and moved on to playoffs, versing Lyons Township in their first playoff match. They were unable to keep the momentum going and lost 16-25, 19-25. For their final match of the day the Hornets played Lockport and battled till the end pulling out a 30-29, 26-24 win. The freshman A team finished seventh in a competitive tournament. Brigid LoConte racked up an impressive 23 aces for the day, Claire Zipsie had 7 blocks for the day and 12 kills. Jenna Suda was the kill leader for the day with 18 kills, Jasmine Carlson also contributed 14 kills. This week the Hornets take on York at home on Wednesday.
Freshman B We had a nice win against Proviso East last week and are looking forward to a game against York and a quad at LT this coming Saturday.
Week of September 14th
Varsity Varsity Hornets had their first conference win against a 3 game thriller with Addison Trail Unfortunately the team has been dealing with some injuries which caused them to struggle a bit over the week, the hornets were winless over the weekend while competing at the Wheaton Classic. The injuries have allowed other younger players to step up and get valuable varsity experience!
JV JV volleyball had an action packed week of matches finishing 2 matches over .500. They were lead by outside hitters alyssa Errandi and Sydney Benson. Veronica Terrell also had a good week of matches. With each match the JV squad has improved which is impressive considering they never practice together as an actual team.
Sophomore On Tuesday we played a scrappy Addison Trail squad. After winning the first set by a hair (25-23), AT came back swinging and took advantage of our tendency to slump in the second set taking it to a third set with a 14-25 win. Riddled with attacking errors, AT pulled ahead in the third set to win 20-25.
At the Lockport Invite last Saturday we faced a tough pool including dominant Benet and a scrappy, strong serving JCA squad losing to both. We had a strong showing however against Illiana Christian serving strong and accurate.
Freshman A Tuesday HSVB met Addison Trail in their second match of the west suburban gold conference, unfortunately they fell in 3 to Addison Trail winning the first game 25-15 and then struggling with serve receive and communication in the second and third game losing 19-25, 16-25. During the match Jasmine Carlson and Clarissa Marron racked up 3 service aces each. While kill leaders in the match were Jasmine Carlson and Kylie Long.
This Saturday the freshman traveled to St. Charles North where they participated in the St. Charles North freshman invite, they split the first match against St. Charles winning the first game 27-25 and battling for the lead 3 times during the game. Unfortunately they lost the second game 19-25. In their second game of pool play during the tournament HSVB started off slowly but worked their way back to beat Glenbard North 25-22, 25-17. In the last match of pool play the hornets dominated in serving to beat Dundee Crown 25-2 with credit to Megan Mihalkanin for serving 20+ serves and easily won the second 25-7. In the first round of playoffs the hornets faced Metea Valley for a second time in two weeks and fell 12-15, 20-25. For their final match of the day HSVB faced Crystal Lake Central, the freshman started their last match off slowly losing 19-25 but fought back to win the last two games 25-21, 15-12, the hornets finished third in the tournament. This week Hinsdale South hosts Proviso East on Tuesday and travels to Lockport for a tournament on Saturday.
Freshman B We participated in two quads over the weekend. On Thursday, DGS and on Friday night Plainfield South. We lost all of our matches on Thursday, but it was an exciting night for Elvedina Plavalj who finally broke through with her serves! On Friday, we took 2 out of 3 matches. The girls practiced hard on Saturday and are looking forward to this week.
Week of September 7th
Varsity Girls varsity volleyball got their first win at home versus a talented Waubonsie team. Emily Drenth lead the team in kills, followed by Paola Gonzalez. On Friday evening they lost a tough match to Metea High School, the girls played well but had too many unforced errors early to come back.
JV JV volleyball had another good week of competition. For a team that does not practice together the team is coming along nicely!!!
Sophomore With seven matches last week the sophomore squad had a lot of playing to do. On Tuesday we suffered a close defeat to Downers Grove South (23-25, 22-25) lead by strong serving from Tess Murray who had 4 aces. On Thursday against Waubonsie Valley our roster was somewhat split because there was also a JV match, however by limiting errors and having strong play at the net by Jenna Suda we pulled off a convincing win (25-22, 25-16). Friday we played a much stronger Metea Valley sophomore team with our split up roster (JV had another match). Riddled with mechanical and communication errors we fell 14-25, 20-25. Despite this loss, we rebounded very well at the sophomore tournament at Oak Forest. The girls went 3-1 only dropping a match to Carl Sandburg who ended up winning the whole tournament! Standout performances by Jasmine Carlson, Jenna Suda, and excellent defense from Jackie Wojcik
Freshman A On Tuesday 9/8 Hinsdale south began West Suburban conference play versus Downers South, the hornets took a commanding lead in the first game with strong serves from Clarissa Marron to begin the match. Great communication and attacking lead to a 25-23 victory in the first game. In the second game the hornets continued their strong performance from the first game and rallied for a 25-19 victory for their first conference win. Jasmine Carlson racked up an impressive 9 kills, while Kasey Hurley and Clarissa Marron contributed one block during the match.
On Thursday Hinsdale South hosted the warriors of Waubonsie Valley; they started off slow in the first game but fought their way back to finish 22-25 after an impressive comeback effort. The hornets carried their momentum into the second game where they won easily 25-14. In the third game the hornets fell 14-16 with competitive play on both sides of the net. Brigid LoConte led the hornets in aces with 5 for the match, Jasmine Carlson and Megan Mihalkanin each contributed 4 kills in the 3 set series against Waubonsie.
Friday the hornets traveled for their first away game to Metea Valley. Hinsdale South took a commanding lead in the first game, but strong serves from Metea tied the game up at 21 and the hornets fell 23-25 in the first game. The second game the lady hornets struggled with passing and attacking and fell 14-25 to the Mustangs. Jasmine Carlson contributed a solo block while Clarissa Marron and Arlecia Ebert also contributed- a block in the match. Mana Rassi racked up 3 service aces in the match with strong serves also from Megan Mihalkanin and Jasmine Carlson. The hornets travel to Addison Trail on Tuesday for their second conference game and will participate in a freshman tournament at St. Charles East on Saturday.
Freshman B The girls played excellent and worked hard this week. They defeated DGS 25-10 /26-24. Setter, Donye Neal was the star of that match serving 10 straight serves in a row, putting us in a nice lead during the first set. The girls suffered a tough loss to Waubonsie. They went 3 very close sets and played strong the whole match. They’ve been working hard in practice and have two Quads coming up this week.
Week of August 31st
Varsity Varsity Hornets lost another tough one to Joliet Catholic 21-25, 17-25. Hornets kill leader was Emily Drenth with 11 kills and 5 digs Hornets have a full schedule this week opening up conference this week with DGS!
Sophomore In another tough loss, JCA has given us more a lot to learn from as we get into the heavy part of the season. Standout performances from Sydney Benson (4 Aces) and Veronica Terrell (3 Kills, 2 Block Kills) helped keep the first set loss close at 22-25 however that drive did not carry over to the second set where JCA closed out the match 25-11. On Saturday the Varsity and Sophomore teams went to a teambuilding course which was a huge success and will hopefully alleviate some of our hesitation and doubt on the court! We look to rebound against Downers Grove South and Waubonsie Valley this week on Tuesday and Thursday respectively.
Freshman A This week Hinsdale South welcomed Joliet Catholic at home Thursday 9/3. The lady hornets jumped out to an early lead in the first game with strong serves from Abby Mihalkanin. After an intense first game the hornets beat JCA 23-25. In the second game Hinsdale South struggled on serve receive and fell to the Angels 13-25. In the third game strong serves from the Angels led to a JCA victory of 7-25. In the match Abby Mihalkanin racked up 3 service aces and 1 kill. Megan Mihalkanin and Clarissa Marron each contributed one service ace. Outside Hitter Jasmine Carlson racked up 2 blocks and 8 kills with a great offensive performance. Defensive specialist Manna Rassi and Middle Hitter Kasey Hurley each tallied one kill and Right Side Hitter Brigid LoConte tallied 3 kills for the match. This week the Hornets take on Downers Grove South at home on Tuesday, Waubonsie Valley at home on Thursday, and travel to Metea Valley on Friday.
Freshman B Tough loss to Joliet Catholic Thursday. Our team is practicing hard and bonding over Labor Day Weekend. We have three home matches coming up this week: Tuesday –DGS Thursday-Waubonsie Friday-Matea
Week of August 24th
Varsity After a tough homer opener loss to Marist the girls were able to rebound by going one and one on Friday in the plainfield north tournament They beat tinley park and then lost to geneva. On Saturday they won the opening set versus Lockport in 2 games and then dropped the next match to plainfield central, it was a close one losing 24-26 in the third set They lost their last match of the day, and finished 12th overall, 3 places high than their original seed.

Sophomore This week was a solid week of matches and practice, starting with a win in our first match of the season against Bolingbrook. The girls showed promise and great team synergy. Thursday we suffered a tough loss against a very strong Marist and look to rebound on Thursday of this week.
Freshman A This week Hinsdale South hosted Marist at home in their first match of the season and fell 15-25 and 10-25. Saturday South hosted a 20 team freshman invite with strong competition all around. The first match against Chicago Christian Freshman A fought hard but were defeated in two games 23-25, 23-25 in a competitive match. The second match of the day Freshman A came out strong against Romeoville defeating them 25-19, 25-16. In their third match they continued to come together as a team to beat Reavis 25-17 both games. The fourth match of the day Hinsdale South faced Plainfield East and with strong serving from Setter Abby Mihalkanin, Outside Hitter Megan Mihalkanin and Middle hitter Kasey Hurley they defeated them 25-19, 25-11. In their last match of the day Freshman A faced St. Viator and defeated them 27-25 in a close competitive first game. The second game strong serving and communication lead to a 25-16 win over St. Viator. Freshman A hopes to build on their weekend success on Thursday when they take on Joliet Catholic at home.
Freshman B During the week of August 24th through August 29th the Freshmen girls B volleyball team practiced and played very hard. The team participated in the Freshman Hornet volleyball invite on August 29th taking one set against Romeoville. The girls are improving every day. They’re learning rotations, increasing game speed and making some breakthroughs with their serving. We’re looking forward to our home game the Thursday!
