2016-2017 Girls' Basketball Weekly Highlights


Week of February 6th

Varsity

The Hornets had one game this week on Tuesday which was against OPRF for the WSC crossover game. With strong defense and great offensive plays, the Hornets were able to secure their last win of the regular season. Their next game is on Monday against Reavis for the regionals play-in. 

Sophomore
The sophomore Hornets ended their season with a loss to ORRF.  Ari Wimberly and Jaylyn Grant both led the way with 10. The hornets had a great season with an over all record of 17-10 and 8-4 in conference. The girls improved as a team tremendously from the beginning of the season. They worked hard day in and day out and truly defined the word: team. ​

Freshman

Week of January 30th

Varsity
The Hornets suffered two tough losses this week. The first was against DGS, and although they fell short, sophomore Emily Koziol had a game high 27 points. On Friday the Hornets faced Willowbrook and celebrated the 4 graduating seniors, Erin Collins, Julie Mitchell, Natalie Spencer, and Rachel Thomas.

Sophomore
The sophomore hornet basketball team had 2 conference wins over Willowbrook and downers grove south. Sylvannah batchelor, Crysta Davis and Janae Washigton led the way. The hornets are 17-9 with one game remaining! 

Freshman

Tuesday vs Downers Grove South
Tia- 10 points and 4 steals
Monteriana- 9 points, 3 steals and 8 rebounds
Vanessa- 3 steals and 5 defensive rebounds
Brooke- 2 assists and 3 steals.
 
Friday vs willowbrook
Monteriana- 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Alexis- 5 points, 3 steals and 2 assists.
Vanessa- 3 steals and 5 defensive rebounds.

Week of January 23rd

Varsity

The Hornets had a game this past Monday at Richards were they won 40-34. Emily Koziol had 16 points with 4 steals and Francesca Markos had 9 points. The Hornets dropped a tough one to Morton on Saturday night, 51-44. Koziol finished with 13 points, Markos with 10, and Rachel Thomas with 9. 

Sophomore
The sophomore hornets girls basketball team had a great week with wins over Richards and Morton. Sylvannah Batchelor led the way against Richards with 14 points. In the win over Morton Crysta Davis poured in 15 points while Janae Washington added 14 points. The hornets have improved to 15-9 and continue conference play this week!

JJ- 2 points and 6 rebounds

Saturday vs Morton 
Monteriana- 16 points, 6 steals and 4 blocks
Tia- 11 points, 5 blocks and 9 rebounds
Nev- 3 rebounds and 1 steal

Week of January 16th

Varsity

The Hornets had three games this week the first being a win against Leyden 34-29.  Evelyn Edmond and Erin Collins led the team in scoring with 8 and 6 respectively. After a tough loss against Nazareth, the Hornets came back with a great victory against Addison Trail. The Hornets were down by 3 in the final seconds of the game when Emily Koziol hit a three pointer to send it into OT. They then closed it out for a 47-41 win, with Koziol finishing with a game high 25 points.​

Sophomore
Sophomore hornets went 2-1 last week with wins over Nazareth and Addison Trail. The hornets fell to Glenbard West. Sylvannah Batchelor, Zoe Williams and Janae Washington were all big contributors. 

Freshman

Tue vs glenbard west- 37-36
Monteriana- 12 points and 17 rebounds. 
Sarah- 8 points and 9 steals. 
Jamie- 4 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. 

Thursday vs Nazareth- 26-7 
Jamie- 6 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals 
Alexis- 3 points, 5 steals and 2 assists. 
Nev- 1 steal and 1 rebound. 

Saturday vs Addison trail 38-49
Monteriana- 13 points, 4 steals and 2 blocks
Sarah- 13 points and 10 steals

Week of January 9th

Varsity

The Hornets competed in 3 games this week. They won against Leyden with great defensive efforts by Crystal Hardwick and Evelyn Edmond. Unfortunately they lost in 2 competitive battles against Downers Grove North and Proviso East. The Hornets are now getting ready for the upcoming week full of games. ​

Sophomore
The sophomore lady hornets had a rough week going 0-3 against their opponents. Crysta Davis, Jaylyn Grant, Andrea Nkansah, Jamilah Cooper and Janae Washington led the way in all 3 games. The hornets hope to get back on track Tuesday against Glenbard West​.

Vanessa- 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. 
Brooke- 4 points and 3 assists. 
Jamie- 2 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal. 

Jan 14 vs Proviso East
35-16 
Tia- 14 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 blocks. 
Monteriana- 9 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 steals. 
Alexis- 4 points and 3 steals.
Jamie- 4 points and 2 assists. 
Sarah- 9 steals and 2 assists.

Week of January 2nd

Varsity
The hornets had one game this week on Friday at DGS. The mustangs were on fire and the hornets had a very slow start with many turnovers and missed attempts. The end result was a tough loss. Emily Koziol finished with 11 points.

Sophomore

The hornets got a conference win on the road against Downers Grove South on Friday night. Jaylyn Grant, Jamilah Cooper and Janae Washington led the way 11, 10 and 8 points respectively. The hornets are back in action on Tuesday at home against Leyden.

Freshman
Friday vs. Downers Grove South
Lost 37 to 17, Monteriana had 5 points and 4 defensive rebounds. Tia had 4 points and 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. 

Week of December 26th

Varsity

The Hornets came back from the holiday break with a 5 day tournament at Riverside- Brookfield. The Hornets lost the first game 41-47 against De La Salle but sophomore Emily Koziol finished with a game high 23 points. In their win against Shepard, the Hornets were lead by Aurora Korfist who went 4/5 from the three and Evelyn Edmond who had 5 blocks. Tremendous defense proved key in their second win was against Niles North. They finished 2-3 overall with Emily Koziol earning All- Tournament recognition. ​

Sophomore
The sophomore hornets went 2-2 at the riverside-Brookfield holiday tournament. The hornets got wins over St. Ignatius and Morton while losing to very good riverside-Brookfield and York teams. Jaylyn Grant, Crysta Davis, Janae Washington and  Jamilah all Cooper had good showings in  all of the games. The Hornets are back in action Friday against Downers Grove South. ​

Week of December 12th

Varsity
The hornets suffered two more conference losses this week.  On Tuesday against Morton, at home, the hornets were outmatched against a high-scoring Morton team. At Willowbrook on Friday, the hornets didn't have enough energy in the tank and started slow scoring only 8 points in the first half. A surge in the fourth quarter sparked the hornets and a fifth quarter would have done the trick! Frankie Markos has provided nonstop defensive pressure and hustle lately and her average of 6 steals a game in the last two weeks has been remarkable. The hornets are re-focusing for the RB tourney next week after finals and the Christmas Holiday.​

Sophomore

The sophomore girls basketball team went 1-1 with a loss to Morton and a victory over willowbrook. Crysta Davis led the way with 10 points against Morton. Jaylyn Grant has 22 points in the win over Willowbrook while Crysta Davis added 8 and Keaton Lancaster and Jamilah Cooper each had 7 points. The hornets start their Christmas tournament on Monday, the 26th at Riverside-Brookfield. We wish everyone Happy Holidays! 

Freshman
Tuesday vs Morton 
We won 32-28 
Monteriana: 18 points, 7 rebounds 
Sarah and Janae each had 2 steals

Friday vs Willowbrook 
We won 38-32
Monteriana and Tia led the team with 15 points each!

Week of December 5th

Varsity

The Hornets had one game this week on Tuesday at Leyden High School.  Though they struggled in the first half, the Hornets stepped up their game and got their deficit down to single digits by the fourth quarter.  Frankie Marcos lead the Hornets in steals and sparked a series of defensive stops.  The Hornets were down by one in the final seconds of the game and unfortunately a buzzer beater shot by Erin Collins fell just short of going in, leaving the final score 37-38 Leyden.  The Hornets are now determined to bounce back for a game against Morton on Tuesday.​

Sophomore
The Sophomore Hornet girls basketball team improved to 7-2  over all and 2-1 in conference with a 33-30 win over Leyden. The girls trailed the whole game and fought back to get the win. Crysta Davis led the way with 12 points while Jaylyn Grant added 10 points. Andrea Nkansah hit clutch free throws down the stretch while Jamilah Cooper secured key rebounds. The Hornets host Morton on Tuesday at 6pm. 

Freshman
Tuesday, December 6th - Leyden 29  Hinsdale South 23
Tia- 8 points, 4 blocks and 6 rebounds 
Monteriana- 7 points, 6 rebounds 
Janae- 6 points and 4 rebounds 

Week of November 28th

Varsity

The Hornets started of their conference season on Tuesday against Addison Trail.  The two teams battled for four quarters but it was the Blazers who came out on top.  However, the Hornets, hungry for a win, came back on Thursday to get their first win of the season against West Chicago.  Emily Koziol had 15 points, 5 boards, and a steal.  Junior Crystal Hardrick also had a great game going 7/10 from the line and a three-point bucket.  On Saturday, the Hornets faced Proviso East where unfortunately they fell but were not defeated and are ready for Leyden on the 6th. 

Sophomore
The sophomore basketball team went 2-1 this week defeating Addison Trail and West Chicago. They suffered their first conference loss to Proviso East. Jaylyn Grant, Crysta Davis and Sylvannah Batchelor were major point contributors in the wins while Jamilah Cooper dominated the boards! The Hornets fought to the end against Proviso East and played very well as a team, but came up short at the end. Their first away game is Tuesday against Leyden. The hornets are now 6-2 and 1-1 in conference. 

Freshman
Tuesday- vs Addison trial 
Monteriana- 17 points, 6 offensive rebounds, Tia- 15 points, 5 offensive rebounds, 5 defensive rebounds, Sarah- 7 points, 10 steals

Thursday- vs west Chicago 
monteriana- 12 points, Janae- came back from an injury that kept her out for a week. 7 points, 5 offensive rebounds and 5 steals 
Vanessa- 3 steals, Jaymie- 3 defensive rebounds

Friday- vs proviso east
Monteriana- 10 points, 8 steals, 8 rebounds, Tia- 10 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, Sarah- 7 points, 6 steals, Brooke- 5 points 

Week of November 21st

Varsity
The Hornets finished the Hornet Classic playing Plainfield South on Friday and Sandburg on Saturday morning.  The Hornets put up a good fight but Sandburg ran away with it in the end with a final score of 36-59.  Emily Koziol led in scoring with 14 points, 3 rebounds, a steal and an assist.  Frankie Markos also helped the Hornets with 10 points, 2 rebounds, and a block.  Although it was not what they had hoped for, the Hornets were ready to get back to work and move forward with their season. 

Sophomore

The sophomore girls basketball team improved to 4-1 with a second place finish in the Hornet Classic. The hornets beat Hinsdale Central on Tuesday 41-27. Crysta Davis led the way with 13 points while Jaylyn Grant added 10 points. The Hornets also beat Plainfield South on Friday 26-17. Jaylyn Grant had 9 points and Sylvannah Bathchelor had 8 points. A very talented Oak Park River Forest team defeated the Hornets on Saturday in the championship game to earn second place. Jaylyn Grant led the way with 11 points! The Hornets are back in action at home on Tuesday.

Freshman 
Tuesday November 22
Tia Miller- 22 points, 8 rebounds
Monteriana- 11 rebounds
Sarah- hit two 3's in the second quarter to get us back in the game. She ended the game with 10 points and 4 steals. 

Friday November 25
Alexis Ayala- Had to step up and be our pointguard since Janae was out with an injury and Sarah fell into foul trouble. 
Vanessa Ayala- 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 points. 
Monteriana- 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals
Jamilynne- 3 points, 6 rebounds

Saturday November 26
Monteriana- 13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals Vanessa and Brooke did a great job taking smart shots unfortunately they just weren't falling. They each ended the game with one three pointer. 
Liliana, Jaylin and Esraa fought hard until the very end of the game never giving up! 

We ended the tournament in 6th place and the girls are getting better and better each day!

Week of November 14th

Varsity
After two tough opening week losses the Hornets are working to improve and get better every day. The home opener of the Tip-Off tourney was on Tuesday night against St. Edward where the team suffered it's first loss after multiple turnovers and a lack of scoring. The story was similar on Friday night against St. Ignatius where the next loss occurred. The team worked hard and fought until the end in both games and is looking to improve and execute better in the upcoming games this week to close out the Tip-Off Tourney.

Sophomore

The sophomore girls basketball team is off to a great start getting a win in overtime on Tuesday and a come back win on Friday in the Hornet Classic. The Hornets beat St. Edwards in overtime on Tuesday with a score of 40-33. It was a great team effort with Jaylyn  Grant leading the way with 9 points and Jamilah Cooper and Crysta Davis adding 8 points a piece. The Hornets beat St. Ignatius on Friday night 30-26. The Hornets were trailing the entire game and had a great come back in the 4th quarter. Keaton Lancaster provided a defensive spark off the bench leading to many break a way lay ups for Crysta Davis and Jaylyn  Grant. The Hornets continue play in the Hornet Classic against Hinsdale Central Tuesday night at 7:30. 

Freshman
At the first game of the season the Lady Stingers won 30 to 23. Our run sparked from great defense from Monteriana Williams with 4 steals. Tia Miller added 8 points and 9 rebounds. Janae Washington had 13 points to add to the win. On Friday the Lady Stingers lost 50 to 18 but never gave up the whole game. Neveah Harper and Destiny Benton both played phenomenal defense.  Tia Miller had 11 points and 6 rebounds.
