Varsity Tuesday, 3/9/2021 at Leyden 50-37 W (5-7) (4-1) The Hornets began the last week of the season with a game at Leyden. Despite a slow offensive start, the Hornets were able to build a 26-16 halftime lead, with 13 points from Bobby Durkin in the first half. The Hornets ran away with the game in the third quarter and increased their lead to over 20 points before the end of the game. The Hornets ended up winning 50-37, with Bobby Durkin scoring 20 and Garrett Bolte scoring 15. The Hornets improved to 4-1 in the WSC Gold, with a HUGE game coming up on Friday night against
Proviso East for the WSC Gold Title. Friday, 3/12/2021 vs Proviso East 66-56 W (6-7) (5-1) In the Hornets’ biggest game of the season, they took on Proviso East for the conference title in the Hornets’ Nest. The Hornets got off to a slow start, falling behind 8-16 at the end of the first, but clawed their way back at the end of the half, trailing by only 4. The Hornets caught fire in the third quarter and played tremendous defense, holding a 5 point lead at the end of the third. South then finished off the game strong, ending with a 66-56 win, clinching the West Suburban Gold championship. Brandon Landfair and Garrett Bolte each scored 15, and Trey King added 13. After a slow start to the year at 0-6, the Hornets finished with a 6-1 record in their last seven games, showing outstanding growth in many areas as a team. The Hornets have now won 4 out of the past 5 West Suburban Gold Championships.

Week of March 1st
Varsity Tuesday, 3/2/2021 vs Willowbrook 83-64 W (2-6) (2-1) The Hornets took on Willowbrook on Tuesday night following their first win on Friday night. The Hinsdale South offense simply couldn’t be stopped on Tuesday, as the Hornets had 47 points at halftime and finished with 83. A season-high 9 Hornets scored on Tuesday night, as South moved the ball and shot it extremely well. The game finished with a score of 83-64 for a Hornet win. The return of Lucas Duffy from injury also helped to energize the team and improve the Hornets’ WSC Gold record to 2-1. Bobby Durkin scored 25, Garrett Bolte 12 and Deon Bomar 10.
Friday, 3/5/2021 at DGS 62-57 W (3-6) (3-1) Friday night saw the young Hornets continue to roll in the West Suburban Gold. In a huge rivalry game at Downers South, the Hornets again looked much improved since the beginning of the year, looking poised and confident against a rival opponent. The Hornets finished off a 62-57 win, with Bobby Durkin scoring 22 and Deon Bomar scoring 10. The Hornets improved to 3-1 in the WSC Gold and 3-6 on the year.
Saturday, 3/6/2021 at HC 59-52 W (4-6) (3-1) The Hornets took on rival Hinsdale Central in a rematch of their first game of the season in WSC Tournament play on Saturday. South started off hot and got up to a 9-point lead at halftime. Central made a strong push in the third quarter, getting the deficit down to 4 at the end of the quarter. However, the Hornets proved to be much more poised this time around, holding the lead through the fourth and finishing off a 59-52 win over rival Hinsdale Central. Brandon Landfair had a monster game with 18 points, Garrett Bolte contributed 16, and Bobby Durkin scored 14. The Hornets are now on a four game winning streak and move onto the second round of the WSC Tournament.
Saturday, 3/6/2021 vs York at HC 39-51 L (4-7) (3-1) In the second round of the WSC Tournament, the Hornets found themselves in a rematch with York, a game that hadn’t been close the first time and found the Hornets scoring just 21 points. The Hornets matched their game total from the last time in the first half in a much closer game this time around. Fatigue again hurt the Hornets, as they stayed within single digits throughout almost the entire game, but South fell short in the end with a 39-51 loss. Bobby Durkin led the Hornets with 15 points in a valiant effort.
Week of February 22nd
Varsity Tuesday, 2/23/2021 at Downers North 36-50 L (0-6) (0-1) The Hornets took on another West Suburban Silver opponent in Downers North on Tuesday night. A competitive game throughout slipped away in the fourth quarter, as the Trojans’ strong shooting night still proved too much for a young Hornet group. The Hornets ultimately fell 36-50, with Bobby Durkin and Garrett Bolte leading the way with 11 and 9 points, respectively.
Friday, 2/26/2021 vs Addison Trail 55-39 W (1-6) (1-1) Hinsdale South took on Addison Trail in their second WSC Gold game of the year on Friday night. The Hornets ran away with the game by halftime, and only extended their lead in the second half. A hot shooting start from the Blazers wasn’t enough to overcome a much-improved Hornets team, as South had contributions from many different players. South finished the game with a 55-39 win for their first win of the season, and improved their WSC Gold record to 1-1. Garrett Bolte led the way with 18 points, Deon Bomar scored 12, and Trey King scored 11.
Week of February 15th
Varsity Tuesday, 2/16/2021 at York 21-41 L (0-2) (0-0) A rematch of last season’s West Suburban Conference Championship Game saw the Hornets take on the Dukes of York on Tuesday night in Elmhurst. After a strong start to the game, the Hornets couldn’t find an offensive rhythm for the rest of the night, struggling with York’s aggressive defense. Trey King led the Hornets with 8 points in a 21-41 loss.
Friday, 2/19/2021 vs Morton 58-60 L (OT) (0-3) (0-1) The Hornets took on Morton in their first West Suburban Gold game of the season. After trailing by 8 at half, the Hornets offense took off in the second half, leaving the Hornets down 3 with 15 seconds left. Trae King then hit a huge shot from deep to tie the game, which would eventually head into overtime. Morton got the best of the Hornets in overtime, however, and the Hornets fell 58-60. Bobby Durkin led the Hornets with 23 points, and Trey King chipped in 9.
Saturday, 2/20/2021 vs GBW at LT 47-55 L (0-4) (0-1) On Saturday, the Hornets traveled to LT for two games for seeding in the WSC Tournament. In game 1, the Hornets took on Glenbard West. Although the Hilltoppers had much more size than the Hornets, South played extremely hard the entire game and kept it close with a team that was ranked in the state. The Hilltoppers proved a bit too much for the young Hornets, and South fell 47-55. Bobby Durkin scored 12 and Trey King added 9.
Saturday, 2/20/2021 at LT 38-56 L (0-5) (0-1) In game 2, the Hornets took on the host LT. Hinsdale South led by 3 at the half, but playing three games in less than 20 hours proved to fatigue the Hornets, as they were outplayed in the second half and ultimately lost 38-56. Bobby Durkin led the Hornets with 13 and Brandon Landfair scored 8.
Week of February 8th
Varsity Friday, 2/12/2021 vs HC 39-44 L (0-1) (0-0) To open up their 2021 Spring Basketball Season, the Hornets took on rival Hinsdale Central at home on Friday night. After a slow first half, there was a lot more scoring in the second half. Ultimately, the Hornets fell to the Red Devils 39-44 after a valiant fourth quarter comeback effort. Bobby Durkin led the Hornets with 18 points in the loss.
