Varsity State Week for Hinsdale South Varsity Badminton Team! After completing a great run at the Sectional tournament, the Hornets advanced their entire team to the IHSA State Badminton Championships. Going into this tournament, Maggie Chen was ranked at the #2 seed in singles and Megan Tai was ranked as the #9 seed in singles. Savannah Morford and Amelia Hoch and Abby Lu and Eva Louis represented the Hornets in doubles.
Savannah and Amelia had a really difficult draw in the tournament and had to play two of the top doubles teams in their first two games. Abby Lu and Eva Louis had a much better draw and finished the tournament with two great wins! Maggie and Megan had a magical run in the tournament with Maggie finishing in 4th place, earning IHSA All-State honors and Megan finished in 12th place, earning the coaches All-State honors. Savannah, Amelia, Abby, Eva, Maggie and Megan all helped the Hornets to our overall 5th place team finish in the state tournament! Congratulations Hornets!
Week of May 1st
Varsity Sectional Week for the Hinsdale South Varsity Badminton Team! After being voted the #1 team (by other coaches) in our 24 team sectional quadrant the Hornets moved on to the Sectional portion of the IHSA Badminton State Playoffs. Representing the Hornets in the sectional and state tournaments were: Megan Tai, Maggie Chen, Savannah Morford, Amelia Hoch, Abby Lu and Eva Louis. Samantha Mettel, Tessa Waszkiewicz, Ann Valiathara and Kyra Harrison were alternates for the Hornets.
On Thursday, May 4th, the Hornets placed 1st at sectionals, winning the program’s 21st sectional championship! Maggie Chen finished first and Megan Tai finished second. Ameila Hoch and Savannah Morford finished first and Abby Lu and Eva Louis finish second at the Sectional tournament. Congratulations Hornets!
Week of April 24th
Varsity The Varsity Hornet Badminton Team finished off their regular season in dominant fashion. The Hornets finished their last match winning 15-0 against Addison Trail, 6-2 v Plainfield North, 8-0 v McHenry and 4-4 v Vernon Hills. The Hornets then marched on to the West Suburban Gold Conference championships where they dominated winning first place in 14 out of 15 positions. This is the 21st conference championship for the Hornets in the last 23 years! Congratulations to the following all-conference winners: Maggie Chen, Megan Tai, Samantha Mettle, Abby Lu, Amelia Hoch, Eva Louis, Savannah Morford, Kerrigan Long, Ann Valiathara, Ava Adcock, Tessa Waszkiewicz, Kyra Harrison and Arya Selvaraj.
JV1 The JV Hornets concluded the season with strong wins. The team finished first at conference and was motivated by an inspirational speech at the start of the tournament by Layla Cabrera (#4 Singles). All participants received first or second place for their respective positions. Ava Chvosta (#2 singles) had one of her best matches all season against Downers Grove South. Huge shoutout to Sophie Petrosius (#3 Singles) for being resilient during her two singles matches. Thank you to Karen Zaki for supporting the team although she was unable to compete due to injury. Great season, JV!
Freshman This last week our freshman were ready to take charge of the season and take home a win. We played Addison Trail on Monday and went home with a 15-0 win. Parker and Victoria played number 5 doubles fo the first time and won in 2 games, and Zody played 10 singles and also won in only 2 games.
The next day we played a quad against Conant, Palatine, and Elk Grove high school. We played hard and won against Palentine and Elk Grove, but ended up tying against Conant.
Our last tournament of the year was the 29th. We played 12 other teams and fought hard all day to take home 1st at number 1 singles, 4th at 2 singles, 2nd at 1st doubles, and 1st at 4th doubles. We placed 1st as a team overall!
Week of April 17th
Varsity Big week for the Hornet Varsity Badminton Team! The week started off with a reality check against Geneva, Hinsdale Central and Stagg. It was an eye opener for the team as we need to continue to dedicate ourselves to improving every day and making sure we have really good practices! Midweek was our awesome senior night against rival Downers Grove South and the Hornets won 14-1. Congratulations to our nine seniors: Ava Adcock, Eva Bargher, Maryam Beilani, Maggie Chen, Amelia Hoch, Kerrigan Long, Samantha Mettel, Savannah Morford and Megan Tai. The Hornets finished the week hosting the most competitive badminton tournament of the season in our own ABCD Varsity Badminton Tournament. The team finished 3rd out of 16 teams and Maggie Chen was the champion of the singles division.
JV1 The JV Hornets had a quiet, but successful week. The Hornets were victorious against another conference competitor, Downers Grove South. The team was led by Isabella Jarosz (#1 Singles and #1 Doubles) and Ava Chvosta (#2 Singles and #1 Doubles). The Hornets then traveled to Stagg where they went 3-5 against Hinsdale Central and 8-0 against Stagg. Faith Elliott (#4 Singles), Eva Gurklys and Maya Chrzanowska (#1 Doubles) had outstanding performances!

Freshman This week Freshman battled at a home quad with Hinsdale Central, Stagg, and Geneva. Our girls fought hard and won against each team. (5-3 against Central, 6-2 against Stagg, and 7-1 against Geneva.) The following day, we played DGS and went 15-0. Gracie Linarez played both singles and doubles and secured wins at both positions. Saturday we traveled to Hinsdale Central and played against 12 teams. We secured a 4th place overall and Abbi and Arooj placed 2nd at 1st doubles.
Week of April 10th
Varsity The Hinsdale South varsity badminton team started out the week on a roller coaster with a 7-1 win against Lincoln-Ways East, but an 0-8 loss to Fremd. The Hornets bounced right back against conference rival Morton on Wednesday and finished off the week with a season turning performance at New Trier’s Featherfest tournament. Captains, Maggie Chen and Megan Tai led the way for the Hornets in their second place finish at New Trier. Sophomores, Ava Chvosta and Isabella Jarosz made their varsity debuts with a 3-0 record on the day!
JV1 The JV Hornets had another successful week of competition. South hosted Morton for another conference dual meet and finished 15-0. Shoutout to the entire team for their flexibility, willingness to compete, and fearless spirit throughout this week.
On Saturday, JV traveled to Downers Grove North where they earned 1st Place. Stellar 1st Place finishes from Eva Gurklys (#2 Singles), Maya Chrzanowska and Kelly Lin (#1 Doubles), and Bianca Bares and Elizabeth Martin (#3 Doubles) led the team in team points scored. Congratulations to Lucy Old for placing 1st (#4 singles) in her first tournament with JV team and we hope you had the happiest of birthdays!
JV2 JV2 had a great week this week! We competed in a triangular at Glenbard East on 4/13 where we were undefeated - 8-0 against Glenbard East and 7-0 against Glenbard West. Our athletes certainly demonstrated Hornet power! On Saturday 4/15, we hosted a quad meet with Oak Park River Forest, Kenwood Academy and Deerfield H.S. Our Hornets won against all three teams fighting all the way until the last point. We were 7-1 against Kenwood Academy, 5-3 against OPRF and 5-3 against Deerfield H.S. A great week for JV2!
Freshman This week began with a tough triangular against Fremd and Lincoln Way East. We played LWE first and won 9-6 overall. Victoria was able to win at 10 singles within 2 games, and Paulina and Jane fought hard to secure a win at doubles. We played Fremd second and won 11-2 overall, this was a hard fight and many splits occured, but we stood up to the challenge. This same week we played Morton and won 15-0. Parker and Zody played a tough split at 5 doubles, but were determined to win. Saturday this week we played our own tournament with 12 teams. Maya and Gracie received 2nd place in 3rd doubles. We went on to tie for 6th as a team.
Week of April 3rd
Varsity The Hinsdale South varsity badminton team came out of spring break like a rocket! The Hornets started the week with dominant wins over Wheaton-Warrenville South (13-2) and Oak Lawn (14-1). Then the Hornets traveled to conference rival Willowbrook during the middle of the week. The Hornets left Willowbrook with a commanding 15-0 win! Tessa Waszkiewicz and Arya Selvaraj had an awesome win in doubles for South. The week continued with the team traveling to Naperville Central for a third place finish. Once again Sam Mettel was the player of the meet with her awesome performance at second singles!
JV1 The JV Hornets finished the week with a 4th Place finish at their home invite. The team was led by Uyen Millon and Eva Gurklys (3 Doubles, 2nd Place), Ava Chvosta (1 Singles, 2nd Place), and Sophie Petrosius and Karen Zaki (2 Doubles, 1st Place). The team also had phenomenal 15-0 conference victory against Willowbrook.

Freshman This week we played our first triangular. We traveled to WWS and secured 9 out of 15 wins. Emma and Monika fought hard as a doubles team to win against both WWS and Oak Lawn. We ended the triangular with a 14-1 win against OL. We went on to play our conference rivals, WIllowbrook, on Wednesday. These matches were long and hard, but we defeated this team 13-2 overall. Lastly, we played another tournament on the 8th at Glenbard North. 8 teams were there and we played in a pool of 4 to start. We were undefeated in pool play and went on to win 1st place for all doubles teams, and 1st place for 1st singles.The other singles players, Gaby, Mija, and Monika, all secured a 2nd place win. Overall, we won 1st by a landslide.
Week of March 27th
JV2 At the conclusion of spring break, the JV hosted their first tournament. First-year team member Eva Borsuk (#4 singles) and #4 Doubles team, Faith Elliot and MJ Hashim, earned points to help the team finish in 3rd place with only a two point differential between us and the 2nd place finisher.
Week of March 20th
Varsity Hinsdale South’s varsity badminton team improved this week. The 24 member varsity team is getting in great playing time in all our quad’s and tournaments. This week the Hornet’s beat conference rival Leyden 15-0, while also splitting a quad with Wheaton-Warrenville South, Naperville Central and Lake Park 4-4 with each school. The Hornets began spring break with a varsity badminton tournament championship against Metea Valley, Downers North, Sandburg, Palatine, & Plainfield East. Kaitlyn Wong and Samantha Mettel had awesome tournament runs as both girls were tournament champions in singles.
JV1 Prior to spring break, the JV team played in their first conference dual meet against Leyden. The team went undefeated. To celebrate the start of spring break, the JV team participated in the Metea Valley Invitational. #1 Doubles (Isabella Jarosz and Ava Chvosta), #3 Doubles (Marianna Alvarez and Layla Cabrera), and #2 Singles (Karen Zaki) went undefeated at the tournament and led the team to a 29 point tie with Metea Valley that resulted in a second place finish. Special recognition to Bianca Bares for coming to support her teammates.

Freshman This week our Freshman battled in two quads, a dual, and a tournament. We dominated in our Quad against Dekalb (8-0), Waubonsie Valley (6-2), and Wheaton North (6-2). Later this week, we played Leyden and went 13-2. After one day of practice, our girls battled hard against Lake Park, Naperville Central, and Wheaton Warrenville South. Lucy Old fought hard in both doubles and singles to secure wins across the board and Abbi and Arooj played tough 1st doubles matches to secure two wins. This same week, our girls played hard and won 1st place at the Spring Break Sandburg tournament.
Week of March 13th
Varsity Another great beginning to the Hinsdale South Varsity Badminton season! After going through a tough tryout period and a great first two weeks of practice, the Hornet Varsity Badminton team started out with some great wins against Homewood-Flossmoor, Lincoln-Way Central, Oak Forest and Lincoln-Way West. We then proceed to jump into our annual Dennis Karnstedt varsity badminton tournament and game away with a third place finish against 12 really good badminton teams. Congratulations to Maggie Chen and Megan Tai for their championships at 1 and 2 singles at this tournament. Also, congratulations to Eva Maria Louis for her second place finish at 3 singles. Megan Tai and Ameila Hoch are showing the team what great leadership is and their examples of helping others and the team is really what makes Hornet Badminton great!
JV1 The JV team started the first week of competition with stellar performances. The team is comprised of returning and new players. In a short time span, each member has grown exponentially. The growth showed immensely on Saturday with a second place finish at the Glenbard East tournament. The hornets were led by Bianca Bares (#4 Singles) Layla Cabrera (#3 Singles) Sophie Petrosius (#2 Singles) and Karen Zaki (#1 Singles), Kelly Lin and Elizabeth Martin (#3 Doubles), Eva Gurklys and Ava Chvosta (#2 Doubles), and Maya Chrzanowska and Isabella Jarosz (#1 Doubles).

Freshman This week our freshman played their first matches of the season. On Tuesday, we fought hard against HF, OE, and LWW and ended up with tying with LWW, but closed out HF with 8-0 and went on to beat OE 5-3.
On Thursday, we traveled to LWE to compete in a quad and tied with LWE. We also tied against LT but went 8-0 against GBS to secure a win.
Lastly, we played in our first tournament of the season on Saturday. Monika and Mija received 3rd place in single matches and Gracie and Maya received 3rd in theirs as well. We played against 8 teams and went 4th overall.
