Varsity The Hornets had a great IHSA Sectional with 5 wrestlers qualifing for the IHSA State Final tournament.
In the Boys Sectional Jovani Piazza took 1st place (175 lbs), Andrew Musil took 2nd place (150 lbs), Alec Miller took 3rd (190 lbs) and Mikey Wallace to 3rd place (113 lbs).
Callie Carr (155 lbs) competed in the Schaumburg Individual Sectional Championships this past weekend. Carr wrestled a total of three matches over the weekend. In her lone match, Carr pinned Mackenzie Lessner of Dundee Crown in 1:32 to advance to the semi finals on Saturday morning. On Saturday, Carr defeated Sophia Sosa of Fenton 7-2 to advance to the sectional finals. There, Carr lost to Valeria Rodriguez of Schaumburg 5-1. It was a hard fought effort from Carr, who will represent the Hornets at the Girls Wrestling State Championships 2/23-2/24. This is Carr’s second trip to the state championships in as many years.
Week of January 29th
Varsity Hinsdale South had a very exciting regional tournament and it came down to the last match and if even one kid did not accomplish what they did today, we do not take home the 1st place team trophy. We scored 202 points to lemonts 193.5 coming in right behind us. Individual place winner were: Mikey wallace 1st and Jovani piazza 1st pinning each match. Alec Miller also took 1st place winning by a 4-1 decision. Jamarion Moffett, Andrew Miller, Al Amir Almannai, and Noah Ririe took 2nd place. Andrew Musil, Darrion Glover and Ben miller battled back to take 3rd to advance to IHSA Sectional next week. 4 non players will be joining us at team Sectionals.
Week of January 22nd
Varsity Tuesday, January 23rd - Hinsdale South 60 Willowbrook 18 Had a great meet winning the dual 60-18. We had pins coming from Toqir Mir, Gavin Slaughter, Noah ririe, Al Amir Almannai, Ben miller, darrion Glover, andrew musil and jovani piazza. Alec and Andrew Miller received forfeits. Antonio Bingham suffered a tough loss losing in the 3rd period by pin with a neck and neck match till that point. Jamarion Moffett also suffered a tough close loss losing 3-1.
Saturday, January 27 - Girls IHSA Regional Callie had a great Regional. She pinned her way to the finals in a 24 person bracket. She won by a 5-2 decision taking 1st place in the championship finals match.
JV Tuesday, January 23rd - Willowbrook 39 Hinsdale South 18 The JV Hornets did not have much success against Willowbrook, being nearly swept in active competition with the final score being 39-18. The sole victory came from an exhibition victory from Javi Terrell (132) who pinned his opponent in the second period. The JV Hornets now finish the regular season Saturday January 27th at Hinsdale Central for the final conference tournament.
Saturday, January 27 @ Hinsdale Central Invite It was another rough outing for the JV Hornets wrestling in the West Suburban Conference Tournament on Saturday. The Hornets tried to overcome the odds as best as they can but many fell short of their projected goals. One highlight of the day was a 4th place finish for Mario Lagunas (126), who fought with all his strength in a tough bracket of competition. Javi Terrell (132) also fought valiantly winning by either points total at the end of his full match, or pinning his opponent in the second periods, finishing in 5th place. James Cardenas, after a quarterfinal stumble, fought his way back to a 5th place finish. This was the final meet of the season for the JV Hornets, finishing the conference tournament in 12th place.
Freshman Tuesday, January 23rd - Hinsdale South 54 Willowbrook 12 The freshmen wrestling team defeated Willowbrook 54-12. All the Hornets victories came with bonus points. Securing pins for the Hornets were Brady Miller (132), Nick Miller (138), Paul Del Mexico (150), Luka Andjelkovic (158), Johnathan Mankser (165), Milos Kaspovic (175), Marcin Janik (215), Jeffrey Sisto (113), and Mario Lagunas (126). Adam Massini picked up a pin in an exhibition to top the victory off.
Saturday, January 27 @ Lyons Township Invite The freshmen wrestling team finished in 5th place at Lyons Township Invite. Leading the way for the Hornets were Jason Jude (126) and Brady Miller (132) who both finished in 2nd place. Nick Miller (138) and Milos Kaspovic (175) finished in 3rd place, while Jonathan Mankser (165) placed 4th. Jeff Sisto (113) and Paul Del Medico (150) also picked up wins for the Hornets.
Week of January 15th
Varsity Friday, January 19th - Hinsdale South 54 Morton 17 Probably one of the most fun and competitive meets yet. All our seniors except for one won. We had big pins coming from Mikey wallace, Toqir Mir, Noah ririe, Andrew Musil, Ben Miller, al Amir Almannai, Jovani Piazza, callie carr and Alec Miller. Also big wins coming from Antonio Bingham and Jon styczinski with their forst wins under the lights. We won't the meet 54-17.
Saturday, January 20th @ York Tri This weekend the Hornets had a Tri at York high school. Unfortunately we had a number of injuries so we started off giving up 4 forfeits. In our first match we Lost 57-18 vs Notre Dame. Despite some tough match ups, Jon Styczynski, Al Amir Almannai and Andrew Musil all pinned their opponents. In our second match vs York the hornets lost 67- 12 with the only two wins coming by pin from two Miler brother, Ben at 157 and Alec at 190.
JV Friday, January 19th - Morton 24 Hinsdale South 42 Beginning the JV dual match at a disadvantage, the JV Hornets fought valiantly in their final meet at home against Morton. Mario Lagunas (126) and Javi Terrell (132) wrestled with patience and determination to get the Hornets rolling; pinning their opponents in the second period. Colin Peterson (165) went bell to bell, wrestling the full 6-minute match winning by a score of 4-3. Nathaniel Fundator (190), in his final home match of his short but impressive season, also went bell to bell wrestling to a 9-4 victory. With the effort from all team members, the JV Hornets eventually fell the the Mustangs of Morton 42-24.
Saturday, January 20th - @ Lyons Township Tournament It was a tough day for the JV Hornets traveling to Lyons Township for the JV Invitational. The Hornets came out strong in the beginning but faltered as the day wore on, finishing in 5th place with 100.5 points. It was not a complete loss as a number of JV Hornets placed in the top 3 of their weight class. Mario Lagunas (126) finished in 3rd place with a 6-0 decision. Jason Jude (132) also placed 3rd with a pinfall victory over his opponent from hosting Lyons Township. Brady Miller (138) fought valiantly throughout the day but ended up falling to 2nd place losing to Downers Grove South with a 12-7 decision. Nick Miller (144) earned a 3rd place finish also pinning his opponent from hosting LT. Milos Kasapovic (175) wanted to be a part of the pinfall party, pinning his way to victory; defeating his opponent from LT again. Frank Waitkus (190) had an impressive day but fell short at the end, placing in 2nd place.

Freshman The freshmen wrestling team lost 48-42. Picking up victories for the Hornets were Jason Jude (126), Brady Miller (132), Nick Miller (138), Paul Del Medico (150), Johnathan Mansker (165), Milos Kaspovic (175), and Marcin Janik (215). Adam Massini (215) and Noah Koehler (126) also picked up victories for the Hornets.

Saturday, January 13th @ Lisle Invite Today was a great day for hinsdale wrestling without 3 starters in our lineup. We finished with 3 Champs. Jovani Piazza winning a close one and getting the fall in the 3rd period, Andrew musil taking first with a pin along with Ben miller. Alec Miller winning a close one by a 1-0 decision all being champs!
Taking 2nd place was Andrew Miller, Al Amir Almannai losing a close one by 1 point. Also finishing in 2nd place was Darrion Glover and Gavin Slaughter.
Battling for 3rd place was Jamarion Moffett winning 3-0 and Mikey Wallace by pin. Kathy will end up sending pictures.
We also finished in 1st place as a team while we were in 4th place the first couple rounds bouncing back to win the entire tournament!
JV JV vs St. Laurence The JV Hornets made quick work of the Vikings of St. Laurence. Many wrestlers earned first period pinfall victories. Jon Styczynski (138), Nick Miller (144), Paul Del Medico (150), Milos Kasapovic (175), and Frankie Waitkus (190) were very impressive in their matches. It was an all team effort, those without matches via forfeit were great supporters of their teammates. The JV Hornets win 66-12.
JV vs Universal The JV Hornets went up against some more competition facing off against Universal High School. Every single wrestler with a match earned a pinfall victory. Jason Jude (126) pinned his opponent in the final 30 seconds of his match. Javi Terrell (132), Jon Styczynski (138), Dan Golden (215), Connor Johnstone (285), and Khali Ellison (285) all pinned their opponents in the first period in impressive fashion. Nick Miller (144), Paul Del Medico (150), and Colin Peterson ((165) wanted in on the pinfall action pinning their opponents in the second period. The JV Hornets walked away with a complete shutout victory 78-0.
The JV Hornets travel to Oak Park-River Forrest Saturday January 13th to participate in quad meet competition at 9:00AM.

Varsity Thursday, January 4th - Hinsdale South 51 Addioan Trail 18
The Varsity wrestling traveled to Addison Trail and handled the Blazers 51-18. Securing victories for the Hornets were Al Amir Almani (138), Andrew Musil (150), Darrion Glover (165), Alec Miller (190), Andrew Miller (215), Gavin Slaughter (285), Jamarion Moffet (106), Mikey Wallace (113), Alex Schuetz (120), and Toqir Mir (126). Musil, Glover, slaughter, and Mir all picked up falls for the Hornets, while Alec Miller, Moffet, and Wallace secured major decisions. Coach Matozzi is proud that the Hornets won so many matches with bonus points. He is also proud of Alec Miller, Mir, and Apollo Cobb (132) who all wrestled well while under the weather. Saturday, Janaury 6th - Evergreen Park Mega Duals
The wrestling team swept the Evergreen Park Mega Duals. The Hornets defeated Stagg (39-35), Lindbloom (78-6), Evergreen Park (39-23), and Phoenix Military Academy (66-12). Wrestlers going undefeated on the day were Jamarion Moffet (106), Andrew Musil (150) Ben Miller (157), and Alec Miller (190). All wrestlers contributed to victories. Apollo Cobb (132) was losing in his match against Evergreen Park, and used a reversal for the pin. Moffet’s pin against Evergreen Park secured the victory for the Hornets. Freshmen Noah Koehler (126), Brady Miller (132), Nick Miller (144), and Milos Kaspovic (175) all picked up their first varsity victories of their careers. Koehler, Nick Miller, and Kaspovic all pinned their opponents from Lindbloom, and Brady Miller pinned his opponent from Evergreen Park. The future is looking bright for the Hornets.
JV Thursday, January4th - Hinsdale South 36 Addison Trail 24
After an extended hiatus from wrestling action, the JV Hornets came out ready for action against Addison Trail High School. Due to a number of forfeits, the JV Hornets had to fight out of a hole at the beginning, but they were more than capable to gain ground. Noah Koehler (126), Javi Terrell (132), and Nathaniel Fundator (190) all earned first period pinfall victories. Colin Peterson (165) fought a tough opponent and wrestled a great match earning a 2nd period pinfall. Jon Styczynski (138) almost wrestled the full 6-minute match but felt enough was enough pinning his opponent with 23 seconds left to spare. The JV Hornets defeated the Blazers 36-24.
The JV Hornets’ next wrestling meet will be the Oak Park - River Forest Quad on January 13, 2024 at 9:00am.
Freshman Thursday, January 4th - Hinsdale South 51 Addison Trail 12
The freshmen wrestling team defeated Addison Trail 51-12. While there were not many matches wrestled, the Hornets received great matches from Paul Del Medico (144), Jason Jude (126), and Brady Miller (132). Del Medico and Miller earned falls against their opponents, and Jude put points on the board for a major decision.
Week of December 25th
Varsity Thursday, December 28th @ Berman Holiday Classic Invite The Hornets came in 6th place as a team. Individually we had Jamarion Moffett come in 6th place along with Ben Miller. In 5th place we had Andrew Miller, Alec Miller, and Andrew Musil. In 4th place we had Toqir Mir and Alex schuetz. Jovani Piazza finished with a 2nd place finish.
Friday, December 29th @ Sally Berman Holiday Tournament Callie Carr had a great tournament pinning her way through the championship taking first place in the tournament.
Freshman Saturday, December 30th - Hornet Invite The freshmen wrestling team took 3rd place at the Hornet Invite. The host school placed seven wrestlers in the top four at their weight classes, and crowned 4 champions. Champions included Mario Lagunas (120), Jason Jude (126), Brady Miller (132), and Ben Miller (157). Javi Terrell took 2nd place to Brady Miller at the 132 pound weight class, while Frank Waitkus placed 3rd at 190, and Nick Miller placed 4th at 138. The team also received contributions from Ryan Murphy (120), Noah Koehler (126), Paul Del Medico (144), Jon Mansker (165), Collin Peterson (175), and Adam Massini (215).
Week of December 11th
Varsity The Varsity had a great meet today with a perfect score 84-0. Proviso forfeited 5 weight classes but the 9 matches we wrestled came out swinging. Everyone that wrestled got a pin and gave everything they had.
Saturday, December 16 - Hinsdale Central Invite The Hornets had 3 placers today including Jovani Piazza taking 3rd place along with Mikey Wallace and Alec Miller taking 8th. As a team the Hornets took 16th Place overall.
JV The JV Hornets earned their first conference win against Proviso East. The team was represented by Antonio Bingham who had a fantastic match that went the full 6-minute time frame. His match was one of the highlights of the night with multiple takedowns and reversals that hyped up the crowd. Bingham used his quickness and intelligent wrestling to earn his victory. The JV Hornets defeated Proviso East 84-0.
Saturday, December 16th - JV Waubonsie Valley Quad
The JV Hornets had a good weekend wrestling at the Waubonsie Valley Quad. The start of the meet did not go the Hornets way, falling to Batavia 42-28. Although matches were hard fought matches, Jason Jude (126) and Nick Miller (144) walked away with pinning victories.
Facing off against the hosting Waubonsie Valley, the JV Hornets kicked it into overdrive defeating the Warriors 66-6. Jon Styczynski (138), Nick Miller (144), John Mansker (165), Milos Kasapovic (175), Kaleb Ramos (190), and Khali Ellison (285) all defeated their opponents is pinfall victories. The Hornets wrestled well, were patient with their attacks, and were able to utilize their offense well.
In the final round, the JV Hornets faced off against Wheaton North. Matches were going back and forth but ultimately the Hornets fell the Wheaton North 45-24. Jeff Sisto (113), Jon Styczynski (138), John Mansker (165), Nathaniel Fundator (190) fought extremely well matches and earned pinfall victories in their respective weight classes. The Hornets’ hearts were left on the mat.

Freshman On Thursday the Freshmen defeated proviso east 60-24. Picking up victories were Jason Jude (126), Luka Andjekovic (157), and Mario Lagunas (120).
Week of December 4th
Varsity On Saturday the Hornets were at a Plainfield Central Quad where they swept the other 3 teams. In the first dual against Normal Community the Hornets won 55-22, this was secured by pins from Apollo Cobb, Al Amir Almannai, Jovani Piazza, Andrew Miller, and Gavin Slaughter. This was Andrew Miller's first win at the 215 pound weight class. The Second Dual was against Glenbard South where the Hornets won 6 of the 8 matches competed, losing 1 of those two in triple overtime!! The final score was 36-9 thanks to some lightweight forfeits. In the final Dual we had a close match against Plainfield Central, which we ultimately won 22-16. Both Alex Schuetz and Gavin Slaughter came away with pins to help secure the lead. Noah Ririe, Darrion Glover, and Alec Miller pulled out major decisions winning by points. It was a great weekend for the hornets!!
JV Hinsdale South vs Leyden The JV Hornets lost a heartbreaker Thursday against Leyden. Unable to hold on to an early lead, the Hornets ended up dropping the dual to Leyden 29-39. Although it was a tough loss, the team did have some positive moments. James Cardenas, although came up short, wrestled a great 6-minute match. Jon Styczynski was a point machine wrestling to victory with a technical fall win. John Strahanoski, fresh off the injured list, made quick work of his opponent; pinning him in the first period.
Addison Trail JV Invitational The JV Hornets fought some great competition and were giving it their all at the Addison Trail JV Team Invitational on Saturday. Placing 5th overall, the JV Hornets were lead by great wrestling by Antonio Bingham placing 1st place in the 120 weight class and Nick Miller finishing in 2nd place in the 138 weight class. Jonathon Mansker was the constellation champion in the 165 weight class. Josh Fitzpatrick, Paul Del Medico, Kaleb Ramos, and Connor Johnstone all received 4th place honors in the 126, 144, 190, and Heavyweight weight classes respectively. The Hornets wrestled well, fought some tough matches, and were very energetic throughout the tournament.
Freshman The freshmen wrestling team defeated Leyden 57-12 on Thursday night. It was a dominant showing by the Hornets as Leyden’s victories were by FFT. Picking up Pins for the Hornets were Jeff Sisto (113), Brady Miller (132), Nick Miller (138), Paul Del Medico (144), Jon Mankser (165), Milos Kaspovic (175), Frank Waitkus (195), and Marcin Janik (215). Next up for the Squad is Proviso East on 12/14..

Saturday, December 2nd - Matozzi Invite
Individually the Hornets had 8 Champs including Jovani piazza, Andrew musil, Gavin Slaughter, Ben Miller, Jamarion Moffett, Alex Schuetz, Alex Miller, and Toqir Mir. The Hornets also had Nate Fundator, Noah Ririe & Mikey Wallace take second place.
Overall the Hornets placed 10 of the 14 weight classes, taking 1st place as a team by 104 points! It was a great tournament and the team had several pins and bonus point victories. Others also contributed that just missed placing including Apollo Cobb and Al Amir Almannai.
Saturday, December 2nd - Lakin Royal Rumble Callie Carr received 2nd place. She went 4-1 on the day with all 4 wins coming by pin.
JV The JV Hornets faced an up hill battle entering the Hinsdale Central JV Invitational on Saturdray, December 2nd. The team fought with everything they had and tried to overcome very good competition but fell short in their respective weight classes. The team did not walk away from the tournament empty handed as Edwin Vanterpool, after a rough first match, bounced back and was able to secure a 3rd place finish; ultimately getting a small dose of revenge, pinning his opponent he lost to in the first round.
On Friday, December 1st The JV Hornets gave it their all but unfortunately fell short losing their dual meet against Downers Grove South. Dennis Hrundovskyy dominated his opponent the full match and Jon Styczynski earned a pinfall victory in the first period. Javi Terrell, Leyden Spang, and Kaj Grzybicki showed great energy and skill pinning their opponents respectively in the first period of their bouts. The next conference opponent the Hornets face off against will the Eagles of Leyden High School. Freshman The freshmen wrestling team participated in the Dru Worker Invitational on Saturday, December 2nd. As a team they finished in 4th place, Brady Miller (132) and Nick Miller (138) were individual champions.
We had an overall great tournament! We had a total of 8 players including: Callie Carr going undefeat with a 5-0 record with 4 pins which she was awarded 1st in the girls division. In the boys Jovani Piazza with a 4-1 record taking 2nd place and Alec Miller 4-1 taking 3rd. Mikey wallace 3-2 record finish in 4th place. Alex schuetz 2-2, Apollo cobb 2-2, Al Amir 2-2, and Andrew Musil 3-2 all came in 6th place.
The rest of the team helped contribute to finish 6th out of a total of 24 teams with a great finish.

The Hinsdale South freshman wrestling team went 2-1 in their opening meet of the season. Brady Miller, Jason Jude, Mario Lagunas, Milos Kaspovic, Frank Waitkus, Franklin Heaney, Adam Massini, Javi Terrell, and Marcin Janik all went undefeated on the day. Noah Koehler, Ryan Murphy, Nick Miller, and Jon Mansker all contributed picking up wins for the Hornets as well.
