Bryce Marable, Class of 2004 - Girls tennis • State runner-up in singles after losing to four-time state champion Elizabeth Lumpkin of Naperville Central, 2003 • Three-time state place finisher, also placing fourth in 2000 and fifth in 2001. • Led the Hornets to second place as a team, 2003, the school’s highest finish • Named Chicago Tribune Scholar-Athlete, 2004 • Three-time winner of Academic Excellence Award • Named team captain, 2003 • Three-year letter winner • Played college tennis at Tennessee (2004-05) and at Illinois (2006-2009)
Paul Palandech, Class of 1981 - Football, Basketball, Baseball • Competed in all three sports each of his four years at Hinsdale South • Became a part of three Des Plaines Valley League championship teams for basketball (1980) and baseball (1980-81) • As quarterback, led the Hornets (11-2) to 1980 Class 5A state runner-up • Completed 6-of-19 passes for 93 yards in state championship game loss to Mount Carmel • Threw for 279 yards against Sterling in the first round of the state playoffs to be named Prep Athlete of the Week by the Chicago Tribune • Became starting point guard for basketball team, 1981 • Played shortstop and pitcher for regional champion baseball team, 1981 • As senior, awarded Male Athlete of the Year, earned David Heinen and Hornet Awards • Played college baseball at Western Michigan and Illinois-Chicago
Coach Mike Matozzi, Wrestling, Football & Softball • Became the school’s longest tenured varsity wrestling coach with 390 dual meet victories in 25 years (1988-2013) • Won five conference wrestling championships while coaching 37 state qualifiers, nine state medalists and two individual state champions • Served as head football coach from 1984-87 and head softball coach from 1984-85. • Inducted into Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame (2011); selected Man of the Year (2013) • Named Grand Marshal for IHSA Individual Wrestling State Finals, 2020 • As a teacher for deaf and hard of hearing, was awarded the Golden Apple Award • Hinsdale South’s annual Mike Matozzi wrestling tournament is named after him
