2022-2023 Wrestling Weekly Highlights

Week of February 6th

Varsity

Hinsdale South qualified 5 wrestlers for the IHSA State Wrestling Tournament. Mikey Wallace took 3rd place at 106 pounds beating the wrestler from St.Rita who took 1st place last weekend. Toqir Mir took 4th place at 113 pounds to advance. Alec Miller took 4th place at 170 pounds to become a two time State Qualifier. Jovani Piazza took 3rd place with a first period pin at 182 pounds. Griffin Carr took 3rd place become a two time State Qualifier at 220 pounds pinning the number 6 ranked wrestler in the state at his weight class and getting revenge for his loss at Whitlach. In addition, Andrew Musil 145 pounds and Andrew Miller both will be alternates for the State competition which will be held next week at University of Illinois at Champaign. 

Freshmen Callie Carr finished in 3rd place at the Schaumburg IHSA Girl’s Wrestling Sectionals. Callie started strong on Friday earning a pinfall victory of her opponent from Huntley in 1 1/2 minutes. Callie’s Saturday was a bigger test for her. Callie stumbled in the quarterfinals but fought hard the rest of the tournament; ironically defeating her opponent that she lost to earlier in the day to finish in 3rd place. Callie fought and earned her ticket to the state finals in Bloomington on February 24th & 25th.​

Week of January 30th

Varsity
Hinsdale South had an overall great regional tournament qualifying 10 wrestlers to sectionals next week. Hinsdale South ended up taking 2nd place as a team. Individually we had Mikey wallace take 2nd place, Toqir Mir 3rd. Alex Schuetz 2nd place, John Strahanoski 3rd, Andrew Musil 2nd, Andrew Miller 2nd, Alec Miller 1st, Jovani Piazza 1st, Griffin Carr 1st, and Gavin Slaughter taking 2nd place.​

Week of January 23rd

JV

JV wrestling lost to willowbrook 39-27. Ethan Frankel, Dominick Rallo, Quinn Yurkovich, and Landon Jasinski all picked up wins for the Hornets.​

JV wrestling placed 8th at the WSC Invitational on Saturday. Dominick Rallo was the top performer winning the 106 LBS division. Landon Jasinski placed 3rd (152) and Juan Vega placed 4th (160).

Freshman
The Freshmen Hornet wrestling team ended conference competition defeating Willowbrook 51-27. This puts the Freshmen Hornets ending the wrestling season with 3 wins and 3 losses. The Freshmen Hornets were led by impressive victories by Jon Styczynski and John Strahanoski both pinning their opponents in the first period. Wojtek Gilarski went “bell to bell,” wrestling the entire 6 minute match, earning a minor point victory. The highlight of the evening was a whole team effort supporting Callie Carr with her 2nd period pin victory. The entire gymnasium erupted for her victory and for the team’s victory.​

It was a tough day on Saturday for the Freshmen Hornets Wrestling team as they closed out their 2022-2023 season. With promise of success that got unfortunately derailed, the Hornets finished the Lyons Township Freshmen Invitational in 7th place with 83 points. Although there were some heartbreaking moments for the team, there were some high lights as well. Jon Styczynski walked out as champion in the 113 weight class. Alex Schuetz fought valiantly but ultimately fell in the finals finishing in 2nd place in the 120 weight class. John Strahanoski and Al Amir Almannai turned two disappointing starts into successful runs finishing in 3rd place in the 132 and 138 weight classes respectively. 

Week of January 16th

Varsity
Callie Carr won all 3 matches by fall in the first period taking 1st place at 155 pounds at the WSC Girls Conference meet.

JV
Hinsdale South lost to Morton 42-18. Rodolfo Antonio, Landon Jasinski, and Quinn Yurkovich picked up falls for the Hornets.

The JV Wrestling Team took 6th place at the Lyons Township invite. Top performers for the Hornets were Jamarion Moffett 3rd (99 lbs), Dominick Rallo 2nd (106), Ethan Frankel 4th (126), Quinn Yurkovich 4th (160), and James Cardenas 2nd (220).

Freshman

It was a tough day for the Freshmen Hornets against Morton. After being plagued by injuries, the Hornets were down 36-12 before wrestling began. However, with impressive pin victories by Terrion Hodge and James Cardenas, along with full 6:00 minute match victories by Antonio Bingham and Callie Carr, the Hornets were able to close the gap to 36-33. But, in the end, it was too late as the Hornets were pinned in the final match. The Hornets did not give up and fought extremely hard to overcome such an enormous obstacle. Final Score: Hinsdale South - 32, Morton - 42 

Week of January 9th

Varisty

On Monday January 11th the Varsity beat St Lawrence 54-27, several pins leads to a great win with several wrestlers out for the meet. Tough matches won by captain Andrew Musil and a come back win by Gavin Slaughter!!
 
On Saturday, January 14th @ Lisle Invite - The Team took 1st with 188 points winning by over 40 points. 1st place wins came from Andrew Musil and Andrew Miler. 2nd place finishes by Griffin Carr, Alec Miller, Toqir Mir, John Strahanoski, Jovani Piazza, and Apollo Cobb. Quinn Yurkovich takes 3rd place. Overall we had a great tournament and all wrestlers fought well!

JV
On Wednesday the JV Wrestling defeated St. Laurence (46-24) and Universal High School (42-30). Al Amir Almanni, Antonio Bingham, James Cardenas, and Kaleb Ramos all picked up two pins for the Hornets. Wojtek Gilarski picked up a win.

Week of January 2nd

Varsity

Hinsdale South wrestling won 51-9 vs Addison trail on Thursday. A great come from behind win goes to John Strahanoski at 126 pounds. Then to end the night Jovani Piazza won with a take down in the last 10 seconds of the match. 

JV
JV Wrestling defeated Addison Trail 60-0. Darrion Glover and Kaleb Ramos picked up pins for the Hornets. Ramos pinned his opponent in :58.​

Freshman

The Hinsdale South Freshmen Wrestling Team overcame the Blazers of Addison Trail 60-18 on Thursday. Al Amir Almannai and Callie Carr represented the team well by earning pin fall victories within the first minute of each match respectively. This victory helps the Hornets improve to 2-2 with Morton being the next formidable opponent in two weeks. 

Week of December 26th

Wednesday, December 28th @ Palatine Invite
The Hornets had an overall great tournament with the team taken 6th place out of 18 teams.
Griffin Carr (220) - 1st Place (Griffin pining every opponent through the finals).
Jovani Piazza (182) - 1st Place 
Alec Miller (170) - 2nd place
Gavin Slaughter (285) - 4th place
Andre Musil (145) - 5th place.

Freshman
Friday, December 30th - Freshmen Hornet Invite
The Freshmen Hinsdale South wrestling team accomplished an impressive 5th place finish out of eleven teams on Friday competing against some tough competition. Highlighting the day’s event, Jamarion Moffet placed 3rd in the 100 pound weight class after a difficult start. Jon Styczynski pinning his way to a 1st place finish in the 113 pound weight class was the most exciting match of the day; pinning his finals opponent with half a second to spare. Alex Schuetz dominated his 120 pound weight class earning himself a first place pin victory in the finals. John Stranhanoski had an impressive day as well, however, he came up a bit short in the end falling in the finals earning him a respectable 2nd place finish. It was a complete team effort to place 5th in the Freshmen Hornet Invite.  

Week of December 12th

JV

12/15-JV Wrestling defeated Proviso East 72-6. Ethan’s Frankel, Terrence Newell, Juan Vega, Darrion Glover, and Dan Golden all picked up Pins for the Hornets. 

12/17- JV Wrestling swept the Waubonsie Valley Quad. We defeated Batavia 38-38; winning on 4th criteria (The team having won the greater number of matches (including forfeits) shall be declared the winner.). Hinsdale South also defeated Wheaton North 39-24 and Waubonsie Valley 60-12. Terence Newell, Juan Vega, Quinn Yurkovic, and Jon Styczynski all went 3-0 for the Hornets. Ethan’s Frankel, Darrion Glover, Mateo Guerrero, and Dan Golden recorded two victories each for the Hornets. 

Week of December 5th

Varsity

Saturday @ Plainfield Central Quad
During the match versus Glenbard south  freshman Alex Schuetz had his first varsity win by pining his opponent. This was followed by 4 more pins from Andrew Musil, Noah Ririe, Alec Miller and Griffin Carr. Freshman John Strahanoski and Andrew Miller also fought hard to win by points. W (60-12)

During the match versus Plainfield Central Noah Ririe comes up with a huge pin at 152 and Andrew Musil at 145 beats his kid 4-0 in a tough back and forth match. The meet ended with a 1 min pin from Griffin Carr!! W (57-12) 

In our match up versus Simeon we only had wrestlers match up in 4 weight classes. All four of those wrestlers brought home pins, each one in less than 4 minutes. Congrats to Alex schuetz, Apollo Cobb, Sam Rallo and Gavin slaughter. W (78-6)​

JV

12/8- JV beats Leyden 36-28. Winners for the Hornets were Josh Fitzpatrick, John Flores, Terrence Newell, and Al Shahim Almanni, and Darrion Glover

12/10- Hinsdale South JV Wrestling took first place at the Addison Trail JV Invite, scoring 218 points.  The individual champions are Dominick Rallo (106) Jon Styczynski (113), Ethan Frankel (126), Terrence Newell (152), and Quinn Yurkovich (170). Darrion Glover (160) took 2nd place, while Frank McCants (120), Al Amir Almannai (132), Al Shahim Almanni (145) each placed  3rd, Danny Golden (195) and Eddie Holt placed 4th, and Dylan Belmonte (138) placed 5th.

Freshman 
​The Hinsdale South freshmen wrestling team came up short against Leyden High School. Even with impressive pin victories by Jon Styczynski, Wojtek Gilarski, Frank McCants, and Al Amir Almannai it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. Callie Carr defeated two opponents; pinning both in the first period. James Cardenas wrestled with heart and determination but fell seconds before the match concluded.

Week of November 28th

Varsity
On Saturday the Hornets had an amazing tournament taking 1st place as a team by a landslide.
Wrestlers taking 1st place were Griffin Carr, Jovan Piazza, Sam Rallo and Mikey Wallace.
Taking 2nd place for the Hornets was Alec Miller, Apollo Cobb, and Toqir Mir, Gavin Slaughter, and Noah Ririe.
Taking 3rd place was Andrew Musil and Alex Schuetz.

Great job to the Hornets on a tough and hard fought tourney!

JV
On Friday, Hinsdale South to Downers Grove South 48-30.
Hinsdale South had a lot of great wins especially coming from Al Shahim Almannai who won a close 2-1 match. There were two clutch pins from Darrion Glover and Landon Jasinski. Terrence Newell also had a key victory that ended in a score of 6-1 win over 

On Saturday, The JV took 4th Place to the Hinsdale Central Invite.
Dominick Rollo took 2nd place
Wojtek Giarski took 2nd place
Jonathan Flores Ruiz took 3rd place
Al Shahim Almannai took 3rd place
Landon Jasinski took 1st place
Terrence Newell took 1st place.

Freshman
On Friday, Hinsdale South lost to Downers Grove South 66-18. Picking up victories for the Hornets were Jamarion Moffet (106) Josh Fitzpatrick (120) and Al Amir Almanni 132)

On Saturday, The freshmen took 4th Place at the Joey Gilbert Invitational, hosted by Andrew High School. The Hornets’ top performers were: James Cardenas champion, 285
