Freshman Leyden Duel - January 26, 2022 After what seemed like forever since wrestling a full team, the Hinsdale South freshman wrestling team faced off against Leyden High School. The freshmen team continued their undefeated season defeating Leyden 56-21. Led by Co-Captain Quinn Yorkovich with a second period pin, followed by quick first period pin victories for Darrion Glover, Edwin Vanterpool, and Gavin Slaughter sealed the win. The biggest highlight came as a team demonstration of unity when Heather Stephens was illegally slammed to the mat. The team rose in support of their teammate, which solidified their bond as a team.
Morton Duel -January 27, 2022 Unfortunately, the Hinsdale South freshmen wrestling team could not hold back Morton High School and suffered it’s only defeat in conference competition. Being outnumbered before the duel began, the Freshmen Hornets fought with everything they had to try to overcome their opponents. With pinfall victories from Ethan Frankel, Terrence Newell, Mikey Jefferson, Quinn Yorkovich, and Darrion Glover held off the Mustangs at bay to make the match one of the most exciting duels in recent history. However, as hard as the freshmen fought, the Mustangs scored forfeit victories which ultimately helped them over the hump earning them a 60-36 victory over the Hornets. The Freshmen Hornets finish conference competition 5-1.
Saturday, January 29th - The freshmen ended their impressive season Saturday facing off against multiple opponents at the Lyons Township Tournament; finishing in 3rd place. There were several key moments throughout the entire tournament. Leading off the winnings, Mikey Wallace was undefeated in tournament action finishing 3-0 and champion of the 99 weight class bracket. All 3 victories combined gave Mikey just over 1 minute and 30 seconds of mat time. Co-Captain Terrence Newell truly earned his championship of the 138 weight class bracket by going 4-0 to win. His most impressive win was in the finals, wrestling a full match (3 two-minute periods) with 1-0 fall decision. Edwin Vanterpool was the third champion from Hinsdale South, again going 4-0 with either a decision fall or a pinfall victory. Edwin battled through tough opponents, earning their respect. Apollo Cobb and Mikey Jefferson had strong matches and finished in 2nd place in the 120 weight class and 145 weight class respectively. Kaleb Ramos earned himself a 3rd place finish after an impressive showing against opponents with more experience. Darrion Glover and Co-Captain Quinn Yorkvich finished their tournament in 4th and 5th place respectively. Adam Mueller earned himself his first win of the season, ending the freshman season on a positive note. At the conclusion of the season, the freshman wrestling team finished 8-2 overall (5-1 in conference) with one 2nd place finish and two 3rd place finishes in tournament competition.

JV 1/13- JV beat Proviso East 30-6. Eddie Holt and Charlie Chartrand earned pins 1/14- JV beat Addison Trail 30-12.
Freshman Proviso East and Addison Trail Duels - January 13th - 14th, 2022 The freshmen wrestling team ended their weekend with adding two more victories in conference action. The first victory was against Proviso East, with impressive victories by Quinn Yurkovich and Kaleb Ramos. Hinsdale South defeated Proviso East 45-6. The second victory came in the form of a forfeit victory against Addison Trail. The freshmen team showed up ready to compete and walked away with another conference victory. The freshmen team is undefeated in conference.

Varsity This week we competed at the Berman Classic hosted by Palatine High School. The team came in 3rd place overall. Individual placers were: Mikey Wallace 5th Place, Toqir Mir 6th place, OScar Choi 3rd Place, Andrew Musil 5th Place, Alec Miller 2nd Place, Manny Wallace 3rd Place, Griffin Carr 3rd place, and Sami Khalil 5th place.

Week of December 20th
Varsity We were on the road facing Geneva, Oak Park River Forest and Yorkville. Even though the team lost all 3 matchups, Jiovanni Piazza came away 3-0 on the day. He was assisted with some wins by Manny Wallace 2-1 and Griffin Carr 2-1. Making his Varsity Debut at 106 pounds, Freshman Mikey Wallace came up with his first Varsity win.
Week of December 13th
Varsity Hinsdale South participated in the Whitlach Invitational hosted by Hinsdale Central. The boys took on some tough competition but held their own. We had 3 medal winners: Manny Wallace took 5th, Jiovanni Piazza took 6th and Griffin Carr took 6th.

Week of December 6th
Varsity Thursday, the Hornets fell short against DGS only recording 3 wins, a decision by Andrew Musil and Manny Wallace along with a first period pin by Sami Khalil.
Saturday the team competed in a Quad at Glenbard West high school,dropping all three matchups. The day was highlighted by Griffin Carr going 3-0 for the day. Manny Wallace and Jiovanni Piazza followed it up going 2-1.
JV 12/9- lost to Downers Grove South 54-6. Alec Miller had a pin at 160.
JV2 Addison Trail Frosh/Soph Invite December 11th, 2021 It was an all-around team effort that earned the JV2 Hornet wrestling team a 2nd place finish at the Addison Trail Invite. Mikey Wallace, Andrew Miller, Alec Miller, and Apollo Cobb earned first place finishes. Terrence Newell and Gavin Slaughter each finished in 2nd place. Ethan Frankel and Jonathon Flores-Ruiz earned 3rd place finishes. The Hornets were represented well against strong competition and earned respect of their peers and opponents.
Freshman December 9th, 2021 The freshmen wrestling team had a great showing against their conference rival Downers Grove South. Winning by a score of 51-36, the Hornets remain undefeated in conference meets. Captains Terrence Newell and Quinn Yorkvich led the charge, each earning a pinfall victory over their individual opponents. Juan Vega, Darrion Glover, and Gavin Slaughter also contributed pinfall victories to edge the Hornets past the Mustangs. Edwin Vanterpool earned a minor decision victory; wrestling the full 3 period match and winning his individual match 11-5. Another great victory for the Hornets!

Varsity On Friday the team beat conference rivals Willowbrook High School 45-36 coming in big with a decision 6-3 was sophomore Andrew Musil. He had a tough match and pulled it out in the last period. Oscar Choi, Manny Wallace, Trent Ferguson, Griffin Carr and Sami Khalil all won by pin fall.
On Saturday the team took 3rd at the Matozzi Invite that we hosted. OScar Choi, Manny Wallace, Trent Ferguson, and Jiovanni Pizza all placed 1st in their weight classes to help the Hornets with this team victory.

Freshman Hinsdale South Vs. Willowbrook December 3rd, 2021 The freshmen wrestling Hornets opened up their conference meets against Willowbrook High School. The Hornets defeated Willowbrook 60-21, with pinfall victories earned by Quinn Yorkovich, Darrion Glover, and Gavin Slaughter. This victory places the freshmen wrestling team at 1-0 in conference competition.
Freshmen Andrew High School Invite December 4th, 2021: The freshmen team took 3rd place overall in team score by earning a total of 149 points. The freshmen team was led by Juan Vega, Mikey Wallace, and Apollo Cobb finishing in 1st place in their respective weight classes, Quinn Yorkovich, Darrion Glover, and Dominick Rallo finishing in 2nd place, and Ethan Frankel finishing in third place. The entire team fought their matches extremely hard and showed support for their teammates as the tournament proceeded. Great job by the Hornets!
