Week of February 2nd
Female Athlete of the Week - Callie Carr, Wrestling

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Callie Carr. Callie took 1st Place at the IHSA Girls Wrestling Regional at East Aurora High School. Callie competed against 29 other schools in  the 155 lb Weight Class and was the outright winner by pinning all of her opponents in the first period! The East Aurora Regional was the largest Wrestling Regional in the state this year and the largest in the History of IHSA Wrestling, for both Boys and Girls. This was a huge accomplishment, and we are so proud of Callie! Good luck at Sectionals! 

Male Athlete of the Week - ​Gustas Meiliulis, Swimming

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Gustas Meiliulis. Gustas had a stellar Conference meet on Friday night! Gustas was the Conference champion in the 50 Free and dropped under 22.00 for a current season best time. Gustas also won the 100 Freestyle. Gustas earned All-Conference honors in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle, as well as being a member of the 400 Free Relay that finished 3rd and earned All-Conference honors. Great job Gustas!  Congratulations on great week! 


Week of January 26th
Female Athlete of the Week - Kaitlyn Amolsch, Gymnastics

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Kaitlyn Amolsch. This past Friday Kaitlyn helped lead the Girls Gymnastics Team to a 2nd Place finish at the WSC Invite with a team score of 139.80! Kaitlyn took 1st on Balance Beam, 4th on Uneven Bars, 4th on Floor, & 2nd on All Around! On Monday, Kaitlyn helped the Hornets win their second consecutive IHSA Regional Championship! She took 3rd on Uneven Bars and was 3rd in All-Around! Great job Kaitlyn!   Congratulations on a great week!!  

Male Athlete of the Week - Noah Koehler, Wrestling

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Noah Koehler. Noah has improved immensely this past year while wrestling two weight classes above his actual weight. He is one of our hardest workers and gives 100% every single time he steps foot on the mat win or lose. Noah this past weekend took first place at the IHSA regional as an unseeded wrestler. He earned one pin along with two tough come back wins by decision knocking off the #1 seed in the finals! He has also helped win several close meets earning us a winning record in dual meets this year. Great job Noah! Congratulations on great week! 


Week of December 8th
Female Athlete of the Week - Varsity Danceline

​Congratulations to our Athletes of the Week Varsity Danceline. In their first competition of the season, the team delivered an outstanding performance at the Sycamore Invitational, earning 1st place with their Pom routine and an impressive 3rd place with their Jazz routine out of 15 competing teams. Their dedication, precision, and hard work truly shined on the floor—an achievement to be proud of! Great job Girls! Congratulations on a great start to the season!

Male Athlete of the Week - Ben Miller, Wrestling

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Ben Miller. Ben is a junior and has become a true leader and captain of the boys’ varsity wrestling team. He is undefeated(8-0) and has been Victorious against tough competitors ranked as high as 5th in the state along with avenging a loss from last year’s St Laurence dual. Ben has 5 pins for the year and is now 2-0 in conference. Great job Ben! Congratulations on great start to the season! 


Week of November 17th
Female Athlete of the Week - Maeve Savage, Basketball

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Maeve Savage. Maeve’s first three games have been outstanding: 9 points, 6 rebounds vs. Oswego; 30 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals vs. Plainfield South; 18 points, 13 rebounds vs. Warren Township. Her scoring, rebounding, and defensive contributions have been crucial in the Hornets’ 3–0 start. Great job Maeve, Congratulations on a great week!

Male Athlete of the Week - Carter D'Andrea, Bowling

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Carter D'Andrea. Carter has led the team in all six of their dual matches.  He has started the season off strong averaging 170 per game and shooting 74% on his one pin spare opportunities. Carter has also been a great teammate by helping less experienced bowlers.  Great job Carter! Congratulations on great start to the season! 


Week of November 3rd
Female Athlete of the Week - Anna Wilcox, Cross Country

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Anna Wilcox. Anna finished in the top half of all athletes competing in the IHSA state cross country meet this weekend with a time of 19:18.  This time puts her in 16th place on Hinsdale South's All Time Leaderboard of fastest times for 3-mile races in our high school's history. This is a feat in and of itself.  Couple that with the knowledge that she came back from tearing her ACL and was unable to do a full off-season training makes this accomplishment even more astonishing.  We are so incredibly proud of this Senior and her running career here at South! Great job Anna, Congratulations on a great race!

Male Athlete of the Week - Mesfin Diedrich, Cross Country

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Mesfin Diedrich. Mesfin ended his season by running a 30 second best at the IHSA State Cross Country Meet, finishing the 3-mile race in 15 minutes and 51 seconds. According to athletic.net, that makes him the 2nd fastest freshman in Hornet history behind Division 1 All-American Eddie Slowikowski. Beside State, Mesfin ended his season with victories at the Hinsdale Central Triangular and the Plainfield North Freshman Invitational, a 3rd place finish at the IHSA Regional, and 14th place finish at IHSA Sectionals. Great job Mesfin! Congratulations on great season! 


Week of October 27th
Female Athlete of the Week - ​Kotryna Melstrad, Volleyball

​​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Kotryna Melstrad.  Kotryna helped the volleyball team earn our first regional championship in 13 years through her dominant play. She had 15 kills on 24 swings for a .454 hitting percentage and chipped in 13 crucial digs and a service ace. She couldn't be stopped as the Hornets won 25-22, 25-15 over Glenbard South, propelling the Hornets to the sectional semifinals. Great job Kotryna, Congratulations on a great game!

Male Athlete of the Week - ​Sava Nikolic, Soccer

Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Sava Nikolic. Sava played a huge role in helping the Hornets continue their incredible playoff run! Sava scored two goals to lead South to a 4–1 victory over Bremen, capturing the Sectional Championship (the program’s first since 1998!). His skill, leadership, and relentless effort on the field were key in ending a 27-year drought and continuing to bring the energy for the Hornets. Congratulations, Sava, on an incredible performance! 


Week of October 20th
Female Athlete of the Week - Addy Filipiak, Tennis

​Congratulations to our Athletes of the Week Addy Filipiak. Addy crushed this 2025 Fall Tennis Season! She went 30-5 overall, finished 2nd at Conference, 1st at Sectionals and 1st at State! The hard work and dedication to her game has proven itself this season. She dominates on the court and the growth has been tremendous. She is a fierce competitor, and we cannot wait to see what comes next! Great job Addy! Congratulations on a great year!

Male Athlete of the Week - Jake Lu, Boys Soccer

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Jake Lu. Captain Jake Lu helped lead Hinsdale South Soccer to its first Regional Championship since 1995! Jake had 2 goals and 2 assists vs. Richards in the semifinal and 2 goals vs. Providence in the Regional Final. He’s totaled 28 goals and 8 assists this season, and 61 goals and 49 assists in his career. The Hornets move on to face Kennedy in the Sectional Semifinal. Great job Jake! Congratulations on a great week! 


Week of October 13th
Female Athlete of the Week - Ivanna Cabello, Tennis

​Congratulations to our Athletes of the Week Ivanna Cabello. Ivanna has been one of our most improved players this season. She's versatile and can play both singles and doubles. She uses her matches to dig deep into practices to continue to grow. Her attitude and work ethic has shown tremendous growth this season and ended the season with a winning record. Great job Ivanna! Congratulations on a great year!

Male Athlete of the Week - Piers Morgan, Football

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Piers Morgan. Piers, a Senior, helped lead the football team to a victory on Friday night over Morton 35 to 14. On offense he had four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. On defense Piers had an interception that he returned for a touchdown as well as four solo tackles.  Great job Piers! Congratulations on a great game! 


Week of September 22nd
Female Athlete of the Week - Monika Aleksonis & Miley Zhang  ​

​Congratulations to our Athletes of the Week Monika Aleksonis & Miley Zhang. Monika and Miley exemplify what it means to be Hornet Tennis Players. They are positive, hardworking and hold themselves to a high standard. They win some, lose some, but it's not about the wins, but rather the learning that happens from each match and each other. They reflect and grow- if something didn't work in a match, they're fixing it at practice so they don’t make the same mistake twice. And no matter what, there is a smile on their face! They are leaders in our program and our girls look to them for guidance and friendship. Great job Monika & Miley! Congratulations on a great week!

Male Athlete of the Week - ​Santiago Lopez, Cross Country

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Santiago Lopez. Santiago, a freshman, finished first place in the Tinley Park Invitational Saturday, just ahead of freshman teammate Mesfin Diedrich, helping the Hornets win the fresh/soph team championship. He has been our 2nd Varsity runner all season long, and his time would have placed top 10 in the varsity division. Great job Santiago! Congratulations on a great meet! 


Week of September 15th
Female Athlete of the Week - Maddy Herrada, Swimming

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Maddy Herrada. Maddy was amazing this week!  Maddy posted best times in the  500 Free again against Downers Grove South. Maddy also posted best times this week in the 100 Free at Stagg and then again at the Charger Invite on Saturday in Champaign.  Her relay splits were all best times!  All of Maddy's hard work so far this season is really paying off; she is an asset to the Varsity team. Great job Maddy! Congratulations on a great week!

Male Athlete of the Week - Wojtek Gilarski, Cross Country

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Wojtek Gilarski. Wojtek is the athlete of the week for his performance at the Minooka Flight Invitational this Saturday. Wojtek, a senior, ran his best time in his 4 races at the course, 15:50 for 3 miles, and placed 5th in the championship flight. His time was 5th fastest in the meet, which had close to 500 male runners’ total. The team's next race will be September 27th at the Tinley Park Invitational. Great job Wojtek! Congratulations on a great meet! 


Week of September 8th
​Female Athlete of the Week - Maeve Savage, Volleyball

​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Maeve Savage. Maeve amassed 20 kills on 42 swings with only 6 errors this week. This works out to an outstanding .333 hitting percentage that led the team this week! In addition to her offensive production, Maeve also led our team in solo blocks this week and shined in our match against Richards by registering 8 kills! In her third year as a starting middle blocker, Maeve is showing improvement after improvement and continues to climb towards her high ceiling. Her consistent leadership on and off the court has been invaluable and we look forward to even more strong play from Maeve as the season progresses. Great job Maeve! Congratulations on a great week!

Male Athlete of the Week - Will Steckel, Golf

​​Congratulations to our Athlete of the Week Will Steckel. Will has had a great first year on the boys’golf team.  He has the best scoring average and has been the number one golfer for the last three weeks.  Last week, Will shot 42 vs. Leyden and 41 vs. Morton to lead the team to two conference victories. Great job Will! Congratulations on a great week!
