Week of May 6th This week the Hornets lost to Waubonsie Valley 6-10 in the Sectional Play-In game, ending their season. Ben Dorrance and Tommy Matulis were awarded All-Conference Honors, while Ben Dorrance earned a spot on the All-Sectional Honorable Mention Team. Well done, Men!!
Week of April 29th This week the Hornets had their Conference tournament at York, losing to OPRF on Friday night with a score of 6-18. Tommy Matulis scored all 6 of the Hornets’ goals and Ian Smith put up a HUGE night in the goal with 24 saves .On Saturday morning, the Hornets beat Morton 16-5 to finish 5th in the tournament.
Week of April 22nd On Tuesday the Hornets had their last home game of the season and Senior Night against St. Charles East. Hornets came out on top 11-8. Congratulations to the following Seniors: Ben Dorrance, Derek Driggers, Cole Haubenreiser, Kamil Kawiecki, Emiliano Moreno, Joseph Ofenloch and Jack Yurkovich! On Thursday the Hornets lost to LincolnWay West 6-12 in their final regular season match.
Week of April 15th Following a long trip to St. Louis, the Hornets started out the week Monday night against York with a loss 3-14. York is an exceptional team and we kept up as long as we could. Tuesday was yet another conference game, this time against Morton. Hornets came out on top with a score of 13-6. On Wednesday, the Hornets lost a tough one against Argo, after tying them earlier in the season. Final score for that match was 4-8.
Week of April 8th This was an extremely long week for Hornet Water Polo. We opened up Monday with a loss to Hinsdale Central, 4-10. After a week of training, the Hornets headed South for St. Louis Friday morning to play in a 5-game tourney at MICDS. Friday afternoon, following a long ride, the Hornets beat Oakville 12-11, and then lost to Chaminade late Friday night 2-10. Saturday morning started early with a loss to Lafayette 3-7, followed by a win against Pattonville (9-3) and then a loss against tourney host MICDS (3-15). It took a little longer than expected to get back to Darien as, similar to past years, the minibus broke down and was not drivable. Thanks to the Mitchell family for the ride to pick up a rental vehicle to help get all the boys home safely!
Week of April 1st Coming off of Spring Break, the Hornets lost to OPRF in a hard-fought battle. Junior Tommy Matulis rejoined the team after a five-week hiatus to compete at Junior Nationals for swimming. Final score against OPRF was 4-13. Wednesday the Hornets again hosted Waubonsie Valley and while the defense was outstanding, we came up short 8-12.
Week of March 18th This was a light week with only two games heading into Spring Break. On Tuesday, the Hornets had a home loss to St. Charles North 4-10. The score was not indicative of the way the men played. Defensively, we came out striking and worked hard but their goalie proved no match for us. Thursday the Hornets headed to Riverside-Brookfield for a tough match, leading to a loss 5-13.
Week of March 11th The Hornets took a hard loss to Shepard on the varsity level Monday with a final score of 12-16, but the JV level came out strong with their first win of the season posting a 13-9 final. On Thursday, the Hornets welcomed Lafayette High School (STL) and lost in a close one, 10-12, but came back on Friday to beat Stagg 12-5. Saturday was the annual Hornet Invite; and we finished the day with a 1-1-1 record, losing to Andrew 2-13, tying with Argo 4-4 and beating Morton 11-3, to finish 5th in the tourney after a heartbreaking loss in the coin toss to play for 3rd.
Week of March 4th It was a rough start to the season this week; we jumped right in with 6 games. Monday the men started the season with a 5-16 loss on the Varsity level and a 4-16 loss on the JV level. Tuesday was much of the same against Homewood-Flossmoor, with the Varsity losing 7-12, but JV was closer, losing 5-7. On Thursday the Varsity boys lost to Lyons Township 0-22 and the JV boys lost 0-20. Saturday was a little brighter at the Schaumburg Quad. Hinsdale South won the first game to beat Schaumburg 14-1, with Kamil Kawiecki leading the charge in goals. It was a tough defeat against Libertyville 5-9 as we fought back in the second half. The boys didn’t have anything left to play Parkway South of Missouri, losing 1-18.
