Varsity On Monday the hornets began the post season play against St Laurence. After a slow start the #10 seed Hinsdale South squad took over and won in 2 sets. Excellent defense by Albert Atczylo set the tone for a comeback and a win.
On Tuesday the hornets headed back for a semi final match against Downers Grove South. In what turned out to be one of the most exciting matches of the season and most thrilling of the seniors careers, the varsity group pulled off a great upset. Taking down the #5 seed in 2 sets the hornets were lead by phenomenal play by Kevin Hamilton, Jacob Kuczaty, and Alan Birtch.
In the 3rd match in as many nights the hornets headed back to Benet to play #3 seeded Benet for the regional championship on Wednesday. In what started off as a very close match the varsity squad ran out of gas and ended up losing in a 2 set match. Congratulations to this group on a great playoff run and a great season.
Week of May 14th
Varsity The Hornets finished off conference play at Proviso East where they won in 2 sets giving them a 3-3 finish in conference. An excellent match by Jack Kassing closed out the conference season nicely. The Hornets also celebrate the nomination for 2 all conference players. Congratulations to Alan Birtch and Jacob Kuczaty on being named All Conference.
Varsity finished off the regular season with a match at Downers Grove North. The hornets ran into some trouble and ended up losing in 2 sets to a very good North team. The hornets head into playoffs as a 10 seed in a very difficult sectional grouping.
JV The hornets JV volleyball team went 1-1 during the week, beating Proviso East before losing to Downers Grove North. The Hornets ended their season with a 3rd Place finish at the Hornets Invite. Congratulations Boys! Great way to finish the season!!!
Freshman The Freshman Team has seen a lot of improvements and am certain they will be prepared for jv next year. That goes along with their last match of the season against DGN. They lost in 2 sets, but I have seen a huge difference from the beginning of the season to now. Everyone has improved tremendously.
Week of May 7th
Varsity For our last home match we celebrated the careers of several phenomenal seniors in our volleyball program. The hornets ended up falling in 2 sets to Leyden but it was a special night and congratulations to Alan Birtch, Zach Zelenik, Jacob Kuczaty, Sean Chander, Kevin Hamilton, Aleksa Gujanicic, Mark Euske,Brian Baumbach, and Joel Makkil.
The hornets finished the week off by heading to Richards for their end of the season invite. With a 4th place finished the hornets were lead by Alan Birtch and Jacob Kuczaty who ended up being all tournament players. They lead the way on offense the entire weekend including a big win over Wheaton Warrenville South. JV The Hornets JV Volleyball team lost a tough, exciting match to Leyden this week2, 21-25, 29-31. The hornets played well, but came up just short of victory against a tough Leyden team. Freshman The boys had one of their final weeks of volleyball and are showing great improvements. They had a tournament this past Saturday and they fought hard in 5 matches, taking 3/5 teams to 3 sets, fighting for the wins. The boys lost a difficult match against Leyden, but they worked very hard. I’d like to highlight my setter and captain, Michael Bicek. Michael continuously leads us in aces and works his hardest every match we play.
Week of April 30th
Varsity Varsity opened the week up at home in a conference match against Morton. A slow start turned into a victory in 3 sets. Senior Kevin Hamilton brought a spark of energy in the front row.
Thursday Hinsdale Central came into Hinsdale South and was too much for the hornets to handle and ended up winning 25-20 and 25-20.
Varsity headed to the Metea Valley tournament on Friday and Saturday where they lost in the silver championship to Andrew. With a 6th place finish there were very competitive matches played throughout the weekend. Jacob Kuczaty lead the team in kills over the weekend.
JV The Hornets JV volleyball team posted a 25-16, 25-18 win vs. Morton before losing 19-25, 25-27 to Hinsdale Central.
Freshman On Tuesday, we played Morton and came up short losing in 2 sets. The scores were 16-25 and 14-25, although the boys were doing the best of their ability. However, they came back on Thursday to play Hinsdale central and were neck and neck the whole time, losing in 2 sets 23-25 and 20-25. This match was one of the best matches I had seen the boys play, I was very proud of the work they have done. It clearly showed this match. On Saturday, we had our last tournament. We had a rough day, losing all 5 matches, but taking 3 out of 5 teams to 3 sets, fighting as hard as we could. Although we didn’t win, the boys kept their heads up and kept working hard.
Week of April 23rd
Varsity The varsity squad started a difficult week of 3 matches away at Downers Grove South losing in a 3 set match on Tuesday. Great conference match to start the week.
Following up on Wednesday with a 2 set win at Lyons Township. Nathan Dahms had a great match and led the way for the hornets.
Ending the week with their 3rd match in as many days Hinsdale South faced York. York is a well balanced team and beat the hornets in 2 sets.
JV The Hornets JV team had a tough week, going 0-3 against Downers Grove South, Lyons, and York. They bounced back with two wins at the Leyden Tournament against Streamwood and Fenton. The hornets were led by great play by Tony Le and Max Noga.
Freshman The boys are nearing the end of their season and they have been working hard. They played hard this week, but fell short against LT and DGS. They played very hard and almost pulled out a W for South against York. It was a very fun game to watch and they were all playing their best. We had a tournament this weekend, going 1-2 with a win against OPRF. The boys kept our game moving fast to pull out the quick win. I’d like to highlight Andrew Hoch for really scoring a lot of points for us this week and working his hardest.
Week of April 16th
Varsity On Tuesday Hinsdale South welcomed Willowbrook to the hornets nest and had a great match winning in 2 sets. There was some great senior connection being had by Jacob Kuczaty and Zachary Zelenik throughout the match. We want to thank all of the dyc/grade school student athletes that came out to watch!
Thursday the hornets traveled to Riverside Brookfield in a non conference match up. Outside of a few errors being made the varsity squad was able to win a close 2 set match. Some great defense and serve receive from Sophomore Albert Atczylo was key in securing a victory. JV The Junior Varsity Boys Volleyball team went 1-1 during the week with a loss to Willowbrook and a win over Riverside-Brookfield. The team went 2-3 on Saturday at the Lake Park Tournament, posting wins against Schaumburg and Geneva. The Hornets were led by the great play of Libero Max Noga and outside hitter Jimmy Pacione.
Freshman The boys had 2 matches this week. They played Willowbrook and lost a hard fight 21-25 and 22-25. They kept up with the opponent and played very hard. I’d like to highlight Julian Herath for leading us in kills that match. On Thursday, we played Riverside Brookfield, and came out with a very convincing win in 2 games, 25-20, 25-17. They stayed on top the whole time and played very aggressive.
Week of April 9th
Varsity The hornets started off a 3 match week and conference play traveling to Addison trail and lost a close match in 3 sets. There was a lot of exciting moments in this match especially some great kills by right side captain Alan Birtch, but it wasn't enough to win the first conference match of the season.
On Wednesday, Varsity traveled to Fenton to take on the Bison in a non conference match. Sophomore Tony Le stepped in and ran a 5-1 offense setting the entire match. Doing an excellent job, this led the hornets to a 2 set victory.
Thursday closed out the week at home with a great match up against Bolingbrook. Bolingbrook has a tremendous offense, but the hornets never gave them a chance to run it. Great net play by Senior outside Jacob Kucatzy and Junior Outside Nate Dahms led the way to a 2 set win.
JV The JV Boys volleyball team won three in a row against Addison Trail, Fenton and Bollingbrook, before going 1-4 over the weekend at the Barrington Tournament. The team is really starting to come together as a group and play as a team.
Freshman The boys had a very busy week this past week! We had 3 games and a tournament. The boys came out on top against Addison trail and Fenton, bringing home a win for Hinsdale south. On Thursday, we played against Bolingbrook, where we lost in 3 games. We had a tournament Saturday and we fought hard and lost against Deerfield and OPRF, but we came back to win against Schaumburg and Wheeling! I’d like to highlight Fady Saad for stepping up this weekend and playing his best. He was a big asset for us this past week.
Week of April 2nd
Varsity The hornets went into Carl Sandburg on Wednesday and had a hard fought match with a top ranked team in the state. The outcome ended up being a loss in 3 sets but the potential was seen throughout the exciting match. On Thursday Stagg came into Hinsdale South and the hornets had a great rebound game with scores of 25-18 25-17.
The spring fest tournament at Glenbard East presented some challenges for the hornets. Being shorthanded, 2 freshmen and 1 sophomore were called up to come play with the squad and did a tremendous job. With a 3 set win over St Francis the hornets lost to Schaumburg in 2 sets and lost a thriller to Lake Park(30-32 and 16-25), a top ranked team in the state. Following pool play the hornets lost to Downers Grove South and Glenbard North. Andrew Hoch and Jimmy Pacione were two freshmen that saw a lot of playing time this tournament giving them some varsity experience early in their careers.
JV Te JV boys volleyball team went 0-2 in their first week of gameplay. The Hornets are working on gelling together on the court and are improving each day. It should shape up to be a great season!
Freshman The freshmen had their first week of matches this past week! At our first tournament on the 31st, the boys played very well and placed 4th in the tournament. On Wednesday, we played Sandburg and suffered a tough loss, but the boys played well. Thursday we played stagg, and the boys fought hard and took the match to 3 games. We had a tournament Saturday at St Charles North, and we had to switch 4 players to new positions. A lot of the athletes really stepped up to the plate and worked hard with what they could do. They played very well and this will be a great start to the season!
Week of March 26th
Varsity Varsity opened up the season at the Argo tournament beating De la salle, splitting sets with Argo and Shepard and losing to Providence and Oak Lawn. It was a difficult way to start the season with a lot of matches but there was some great volleyball being played. Nathan Dahms was named to the all tournament team.
