Week of February 18th - IHSA State Meet In our first State appearance in 4 years, Freshman Will Gallagher had a lifetime best 200 Free and finished 22nd overall. Will finished 31st in the 500 Free. Tommy Matulis was 19th in the 100 Breaststroke and finished 10th in the 200 IM, earning All-State Recognition for his swim. Hinsdale South finished 41st in the team standings out of 102 teams in the state.
Week of February 11th - IHSA Sectional What a great Sectional meet for Hinsdale South!! We had a 96.5% lifetime best times rate with 28 of 29 best swims. Sectional champions Will Gallagher in the 200 Free and Tommy Matulis in the 200 IM continued a best time run. Tommy broke the Pool Record at York in the IM. After being rested because of snow days, Kamil Kawiecki and Joe Ofenloch dropped time in the sprint free races. Freshman Nick Momchev went under a minute in the 100 Fly for the first time. Will Gallagher qualified for the 500 Free and Tommy Matulis in the 100 Breaststroke at the back end of the meet. Jack Yurkovich finished his swimming career with a lifetime best in the 100 Back, and Juniors Matt Krauz and James Kurowski swam to lifetime bests in their individual events.
Week of January 28th Where do I start?? We WON the Conference Meet!!! Big wins today from all 3 Relays, Tommy Matulis in the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke, Will Gallagher in the 200 and 500 Free. Extraordinary swims today by Senior Jack Yurkovich placing 2nd in the 100 Back, James Kurowski placing 4th in the 100 Breaststroke and Frank Finnegan placing 3rd in the 200 and 500 Freestyles. Also exceptional swims by Joe Ofenloch, placing 4th in the 50 Free, Nick Momchev and Derek Driggers placing 2 and 3 respectively in the 100 Fly, Kamil Kawiecki and Joe Ofenloch placing 2 and 4 respectively in the 100 Free. These guys were on fire!! Such an impressive way to start the Championship season!
Week of January 21st This week the Hornets traveled to Lyons Township for their annual Invite. Emiliano Moreno dropped 8 seconds in the 200 Free for a season best swim. Will Gallagher placed 3rd in the 200 Free and 6th in the 500. Tommy Matulis ws 5th in the 200 IM and 4th in the 100 Breaststroke. Junior Liam Mitchell placed 5th in Diving.
Week of January 14th This week the Hornets swam Leyden in their last home dual meet of the season. JV lost 53-95 with some great swims by Aamir Merchant and Matas Novickis. Varsity won the meet 106-64. Man of the meet against Leyden was Aamir Merchant. On Saturday, the Hornets traveled to Lockport. The team finished 9th with strong finishes in many events. Tommy Matulis was 2nd in the 200 IM and 2nd in the 100 Breaststroke. Will Gallagher finished 3rd in the 200 Free and 2nd in the 100 Back. Medley Relay team of Gallagher, Matulis, Driggers and Kawiecki finished top 8, and the 400 Free Relay team of Kawiecki, Krauz, Gallagher and Matulis finished 5th. Man of the Meet at Lockport was Will Gallagher for his solid performance in the 100 Back.
Week of January 7th This week the Hornets faced off against AT/WB for a conference dual meet. JV won by a narrow 50-48. Varsity closed out a win with a score of 104-66. Man of the Meet was Ben Dorrance. Ben is coming off a concussion in his first meet of the season and split a season beat 25.75 in the 200 Free relay. On Saturday, Liam Mitchell finished 39th in the Hinsdale Central Diving Invite At Glenbrook South.
Week of December 31st While the team had great swims against Downers Grove South, the Hornets came up short by 5 points and lost the meet Friday morning. Top honors for the meet went to Tommy Matulis and Will Gallagher, both won both of their individual events. 200 Medley relay of Tommy Matulis, Will Gallagher, Derek Driggers and Kamil Kawiecki won their event. Diver Liam Mitchell was the Man of the Meet. On Saturday, the Hornets hosted the annual James Wheelock College Events Inviational. Will Gallagher was 2nd in the 200 Free and 4th in the 200 Fly. Tommy Matulis finished 3rd in the 400 IM and 3rd in the 200 Breaststroke. Matt Krauz was the Man of the Meet.
Week of December 24th
Thursday the men travelled to Lincoln-Way Central for their annual invite over Christmas break. The team of Tommy Matulis, Will Gallagher, Derek Driggers and Matt Krauz finished 4th in the 200 Medley Relay. Junior Tommy Matulis won both the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke. Freshman Will Gallagher finished 2nd in the 200 Free and 3rd in the 500 Free. The team of Kamil Kawiecki, Matt Krauz, Will Gallagher and Tommy Matulis finished 5th in the 400 Free Relay. Next week the Hornets face off against conference rival Downers Grove South on Friday and then host the James Wheelock College Events Invitational on Saturday.
Week of December 10th
The Hornets bested the Mustangs of Morton in their first Conference dual meet of the season. Man of the Meet goes to Emiliano Moreno for his outstanding come from behind win in the Varsity 500 Freestyle. On Saturday, the Hornets traveled south to Bloomington for their annual invitational. Man of the Meet honors at Bloomington went to Junior Tommy Matulis for his 2nd place finish in the 200 IM and 1st place finish in the 100 Breaststroke. Tommy also had season best splits in both the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay.
Week of December 3rd
It was a short week for the Hornets with a long drive to Oswego East on Thursday night. The Hornets fell short of a win, but had some great swims. Charlie Nilles was the Man of the Meet for his time drops in both the 200 Free and 100 Back. Will Gallagher had a solid performance in the Varsity 200 Free and 500. Freshman Simeon Ivanov swam a great 200 IM. Next week’s schedule has the Hornets at Morton on Friday night for our first Conference dual meet of the season, and then on to Bloomington Saturday for the annual Invitational.
Week of November 26th This week the men had their first meets of the season; they started out strong at the Deerfield Relay Invite. The 300 IM Relay of Tommy Matulis, Nick Momchev and Will Gallagher finished a strong 3rd, and the 400 Free Relay team of Kamil Kawiecki, Derek Driggers, Matt Krauz and Tommy Matulis finished 5th. The team was 6th overall with great competition from top caliber teams in the northern part of the state. On Saturday our tri meet against OPRF and Proviso West turned into a dual meet against OPRF. The varsity boys were tired but still turned in some impressive performances. This week the men travel to Oswego East for a dual meet.
