Varsity Sectionals: in the Sectional Semis, the Hornets played another solid game all around vs a tough Benet team who was new to the 2A Ihsa playoffs this year. The 2-0 win was thanks to two early goals in the game by Gina Cavalli and Erin Alajoki who were assisted by Toss Sobol and Cali Vanderplow respectively. Luckily, the early goals were enough to keep Benet at Bay, athough their many chances late in the second half were saved by the defense and the player of the game, Radhika Patel, who made some amazing saves to keep a clean sheet in the net. In the Sectional Final, it was one for the memory books for the Seniors on Graduation Night! The hornets thwarted a very strong offensive powerhouse in Wheaton St. Francis and won 3-1 with some fancy goals of their own. Cali Vanderplow started off the scoring with a nice goal of her own and then Tess Sobol popped a header in of a corner and then buried a massive shot for the third goal of the game! The Hornets allowed St. Francis a lucky one on a questionable missed offside call but nonetheless ran back into graduation with the Sectional Championship Plaque. It will be a night to remember for this group since we will all try to forget the Super Sectional Game that was lost in a heartbreaking way on Tuesday. The tough 0-1 loss to Lemont in the last two minutes prevented the team from the state playoffs. The Hornets had some major takeaways an a hugely successful season however. 2017: Overall Record: 18-5-3 WSC GOLD Conference Record: 6-0 WSC GOLD Conference Champions (first time over DGS in 16 years) IHSA Regional Champions IHSA Sectional Champions 19 shutouts - 77 goals scored vs 11 goals against

Varsity This week the team clinched the Conference Championship Title by beating Leyden in the last WSC Gold game of the season! The Leyden game was a fun 5-0 victory with the following stats: Goal 1: Gina Cavalli – Assist 1: Alexis Kotsiantos, Goal 2: Erin Alajoki – Assist 2: Cali Vanderplow, Goal 3: Abbi Mazurek – Assist 3: Tess Sobol, Goal 4: Kerry Glimco – Assist 4: Gina Cavalli, and Goal 5: Gina Cavalli – Assist 5: Erin Alajoki. It was a great night full of excitement and brand new T-Shirts that showed off the Championship Accomplishment for the first time in 16 years! Later in the week, the team battled one of their very best opponents of the season on Senior Night. It was Downers Grove North who snuck a single goal in for an unlucky loss against a State-Bound strong team. Although the seniors would have loved a win on Senior Night, they should be proud of their efforts in the deadlocked game. Next up - the #roadtostate IHSA Playoffs! JV Our last week was all about playing our best soccer. I was proud to see that we did J We traveled to Addison Trail and dominated the entire game as we put in a complete game. Mia, Toula, and Jayla earned Player of the Match status. Special shouts to Toula for scoring her first goal! Although we finished the season with a tie, we did it playing some of our best defensive soccer. For this, everyone earned player of the match status. I was happy to tell the team I was proud to be their coach as we brought things to a close. Until next year …
5.8 - @Addison Trail – W 4-0
5.10 – vs. DGN – T 0-0
Freshman The freshman girls soccer team ended the season with a 2-2 tie to Addison Trail. The score did not reflect the game, because the Hornets had possession of the ball for 85% of the game. I was really proud of the way the girls kept possession, switched the field, and connected passes. These were all goals we set as a team before the season started. Alexa Gianni and Angelina Bucio netted their first goals of the season to help tie the game at 2-2. Overall, the Hornets really improved throughout the season, and ended up with one more win than the 2015-2016 team!
Week of May 1st
Varsity The team picked up two more wins this week with a score of 10-0 collectively with wins over Montini and Morton. In the 7-0 win at Montini, it took the squad some time to get going, but once they buried that first goal in the 18th minute, the flood gates were open. Multiple hornets got involved in the scoring and assisting in that game. The hornets took one more step closer to clinching the WSC Gold Conference title by beating the Morton Mustangs 3-0 at home on Thursday. Goals were scored by Cali Vanderplow, Alexis Kotsiantos, and Erin Alajoki. The team is looking forward to their last conference game on Tuesday at home vs Leyden, where the can win that title with a victory!
JV Even though our offense continued to struggle, our defense continued to improve with each game. It was awesome to see the girls playing harder defense for their teammates. The players of the match against York were Mia, Alyssa M, Izzy, Hailey, and Dom. In the sophomore battle against Morton, Al, Emily, and Francesca earned player of the match status. Well done, lady Hornets! We ended the week on Saturday with yoga, a soccer tennis tournament, and eating fruit and bagels while we all shared something we learned over the course of the season. One thing mentioned several times was that we really became a team, on and off the field. Special shouts to Diamond, Keaton, Francesca, and Brig for playing an awesome championship match in soccer tennis.
5.3 – vs. York – L 0-3
5.4 – vs. Morton – L 2-4

Week of April 24th
Varsity The Varsity had 3 wins this week but unfortunately had to settle for 2 wins and 1 tie after a technicality in the Andrew game on Saturday! The week began with an 8-0 victory over Proviso East where Mackenzie Hill was named the player of the game after burying a nice long distance free-kick! On Thursday, the team added another W to the win column with a 2-0 victory over York. But it was the 2-2 tie on Saturday with Andrew that ended in frustration. After a very windy, rainy and cold game at home, the Hornets deserved to walk away with a win but had to settle for an untimely off-sides call with 8 seconds left where the winning goal was called back by the referees. The team showed great resilience by coming back after being down 0-2 for most of the game. Cali Vanderplow nailed a free-kick shot (twice) to start the comeback off while Erin Alajoki tapped in a corner kick by Alexis Kotsiantos, shortly after. The epic last minute heroics came off of a smart free-kick that Alexis took early while the opponent was setting up their wall. Her smart play ended with a shot that hit off the cross bar and came down to a smart run-in play by Gopika Patel who came from the Center Back position to clean house on the rebound and win the game! In an unlucky situation, the goal was called back for off-sides on that play and the game ended as a 2-2 tie. The team should be commended for their efforts on the comeback but must also learn that taking care of business early and often is the key!
JV We prepared a different formation for the notoriously strong LT squad and the hard defensive work paid off as we went into the second half tied 0-0. Eventually LT was able to crack our strong organized defense but the game plan worked due to the girls’ team effort. For this, the entire defense earned player of the game status. We continued to battle against two other quality opponents the rest of the week but we couldn’t continue offensive production from last week. Special shouts to Emily and Diamond for being voted players of the game against Andrew.
4.24 – vs. Lyons Township – L 0-4
4.26 - @Morton – L 1-3
4.29 – vs. Andrew – L 0-2
Freshman The Freshman Girls Soccer team played three games this past week. After losing to LT and Morton, they braved the cold to pull out their 3rd win of the season against a strong Andrew team. The team played really hard in the first half fighting off the wind and a bunch of shots on goal. Maaria Abdel-Moneim came up with some huge saves to only let in one goal in the first half. Sara Houska had a shut-out in the 2nd half to lead the Hornets to a great 2-1 victory. Ania Hayes led the charge on a break away and Lily Lamas scored on a rebound. Then Peyton Sessman beat a defender on the left side and finished it into the right corner. The Hornets are hoping to carry their win into the next week against Oak Park River Forest and York. Go Hornets!
Week of April 17th
Varsity The Hornets won their third conference game on Tuesday 8-0 over Addison Trail! While the game was full of great offense, it was cool to see some firsts for the squad. It was the First time Radhika Patel played forward and not goalkeeper! The first time we had a new goalkeeper which was coincidentally, Gopika Patel who replaced her sister. There were also Some first time goals scored this season by Gopika Patel & Kerry Glimco. JV We continued our winning ways this week! We put in two very strong performances as we continued to gel as a team J Last week we started the week with a 0-18 goal differential. Since then we flipped the script as our offense started to click, resulting in a 13-0 goal differential and a 3 game winning streak. Emily, Mercedes, and Al were voted Players of the Match against Willowbrook. Each scored quality goals and Emily scored a beautiful free kick from 30 yards out! The team decided that everyone deserved to be a player of the game against Leyden since it was a complete team win. Big ups!
4.17 - @Willowbrook – W 5-0
4.19 – vs. Leyden – W 6-0
Freshman The Freshman Girls Soccer team had a tough week with games on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The girls played great in all three games. They lost 3-1 to Leydon, and 2-1 to a very competitive Downers Grove South. We came up with our 2nd win on Thursday defeating Willowbrook 2-0. Kassie Keating and Taylor Panico each netted a goal for the Hornets. Our defense has been solid, with Isabel Villagomez and Marina Milovanovic in the center and Jocelyn Martinez, Carly Miller, Angelina Bucio, and Justina Astrauskaite on the wings. There has been a lot of improvement in our back line and overall passing and possessing. We hope to continue the trend this week against LT, Morton, and Andrew. Go Hornets!!
Week of April 10th
Varsity Last week started off great with an epic, Shootout Victory over DGS for the biggest win of the season so far for the Hornets! The game was tied 0-0 and went into overtime and then penalty kicks. It was a 5 for 5 offensive team that scored the penalties including one each by: Gina Cavalli, Alexis Kotsiantos, Erin Alajoki, Tess Sobol and Cali Vanderplow. The game winning big save was made by goalkeeper Radhika Patel on the 4th kick by DGS to secure the win. This victory marks the first win over DGS since 2001 when the Hornets last won Conference. While the week began on a great note, the next two Pepsi Showdown games both resulted in losses to Maine South 0-2 on Thursday and Wheaton South 0-1 on Saturday. Although the team went 0-3 in the overall, the Patel twins had great outings in the Pepsi Showdown games where Radhika made some big saves and Gopika handled the back line of the defense against some very strong Top Rated players.
JV Our 5th week started very poorly but ended on a high note. We played four games in 5 days and got beat up by a combined score of 0-18. However, we helped out the Special Olympics Soccer team by officiating and cheering them on after our practice on Friday. This was good team bonding The next day we all came out and beat Fenton to start our 3 game winning streak! Izzy and Mercedes were named players of the game for each scoring a goal and playing strong the entire game. Players of the game in our battle against Glenbard West – Tyler, Jayla, and Dom. PoG against Hinsdale Central – Diamond, Allison, and Ally. Big ups, ladies! • 4.10 – vs, Glenbard West – L 0-5 • 4.11 - @DGS – L 0-7 • 4.12 - @Hinsdale Central – L 0-6 • 4.14 – Special Olympics Fútbol • 4.15 – vs. Fenton – W 2-0 Freshman The Freshman girls soccer team suffered two losses on Monday and Wednesday. But the girls worked really hard at practice and earned their first win on Saturday April 15th against Fenton. Ania Hayes scored 2 goals and Lily Lamas scored 1, to lead the Hornets to a 3-0 victory. The back line was strong with center backs Isabel Villagomez and Marina Milovanovic. They kept the ball in our offensive half for most of the game. Goalkeepers Sara Houska and Gisselle Ramirez kept the shutout for the Hornets. I am super proud of our first win and we will continue that competitiveness for a week full of games. Come support us Monday vs. Willowbrook at 4:45!
Week of April 3rd
Varsity This week the hornets went 1-1-1 with a conference opening win over Willowbrook, cross conference tie to Glenbard West and a Loss at game one of the Pepsi Showdown.
In the win at Willowbrook on Tuesday, there were some great goals scored by the hornets although the defense played a high line and very aggressive game. The goals were scored by the player of the game, Abbi Mazurek, Gina Cavalli and Cali Vanderplow while Alexis Kotsiantos provided two of those assists.
In the 0-0 tie vs Glenbard West on Thursday at home, the hornets struggled to find the back of the net vs the Hilltoppers' strong defense and goalkeeping.
Saturday was a beautiful day for soccer at the opening of the Pepsi Showdown. The hornets were excited and humbled to be a part of the Championship bracket and earned a high seed to face off against the local powerhouse in Lyons Township. The overpowering midfield and strong offense of the opponent were too much too handle and the Hornets suffered their first loss 0-3 and unfortunately gave up their first goals of the season. The game was a good measuring stick and learning experience for where the team wants to go next week. The big DGS rivalry game is Tuesday and small adjustments and tweaks to some positions will hopefully prove to be the answer.
JV 4/4 - We (the sophomores only) earned our first win against Willowbrook 1-0. It was a great complete sophomore squad victory. Big ups!
4/6 – Our own Belle Reyes won the Dancing with the Stars school competition. She donated all the proceeds to the soccer program. Respect!
4/8 – We played Riverside Brookfield in a great team effort. Unfortunately, we lost 1-0 after playing solid defense the entire game. Our goalkeeper, Alma, had to stand on her head to keep us in the game at times She earned player of the game along with Jayla and Keaton. Big ups!
Freshman The freshman girls soccer team finally played their second game of the season against Riverside Brookfield on Saturday, April 8. The girls played well in the first half only conceding one goal. But Riverside Brookfield scored in the first ten minutes of the second half. The Hornets did not give up! Ania Hayes scored followed by Peyton Seseman to tie the game at 2-2! The final score was a loss of 4-2 but the girls played their hearts out and are ready for the game against Glenbard West on Monday. Go Hornets!
Week of March 27th
Varsity During spring break the team had just one game this week vs Marist at Home on Friday. It was a good battle for 80 minutes but Cali Vanderplow struck twice in the second half to help the hornets to their 6th victory of the season. Both goals came in the second half as the team had more chances and looks in that half. The first goal was off of a beautiful first-touch trap by Tess Sobol who then carried it up the middle and laid it off to Cali for the right footed finish. The second goal was off a nice square pass from Mackenzie Hill who found Cali in the center of the field where she hit a solid ball over the Marist goalkeepers head. It was a good win for the team which extended their shutout streak and is now at 22 goals to 0 against.
JV We trained a couple of times over break and played once against Marist on the Friday before we all came back from break. We lost 5-1. Emily scored our only goal of the game.
Week of March 20th
Varsity The hornets had another great week with a victory over the cross-town rivals, Hinsdale Central on Tuesday and a Tournament Championship at the Quincy Tourney this past weekend! It was a 3-0 win over Central where Tess Sobol was the player of the game and also had a solid goal. Erin Alojoki and Cali Vanderplow picked up the other two goals in the game as well.
The team took a long bus ride to Quincy for their weekend tournament and left with a clean slate, 2 wins and a tie. In the first game it was a 0-0 battle vs the host Quincy and the Hornets needed a few more minutes to possibly win the game as they were the aggressor the entire second half. The player of the game was Radhika Patel for making some amazing saves in the net and keeping her shutout record strong! The next day, the team had two wins with the first one over Ladue 2-0 and the second, a 5-0 win over Plainfield Central. Kendra Rees played solid defense vs Ladue and earned the player of the game award while the entire team earned the award for the Plainfield Game! A big congrats goes to Sydney Puz for her first goal of her varsity career and to Mackenzie Hill and Nicole Kilrea for their first goals of the season! The team took first place in the tournament And is excited to protect their shutout status. The stats page will show more specific stats with goals and point totals.
Week of March 13th

Each of the goals were shot over the top of the Lemont Goalkeeper. In addition the entire defense played well but specifically, Emily Ofenloch, who earned player of the game honors.

The players of the game were Taylor & (captain) Keaton. Our second match was against a formidable Lemont team. Although we played better than our first game, we ended up losing 1-0.
