Varsity The Hinsdale South Wrestling team qualified 4 wrestlers for the IHSA Individual State Tournament this weekend in Champaign, IL. The Hornets competed against some very stiff opposition in the first round, losing all 4 matches. The weekend held many valuable learning experiences for the first time qualifiers, however. Seeing the structure, feeling the competition, and following the schedule of their first state tournament will benefit underclassmen Aiden McGivney, Keenan Stewart and Alex Diaz greatly as they look forward to raising the bar for themselves and their team next season!
Week of February 5th
Varsity The Hornets hosted the Individual Sectional Tournament, second round of the Individual State Series, on Saturday. 9 Hornet wrestlers had qualified for the tournament with hopes to place in the top 4 and advance to the Individual State Tournament!
As a team, the Hornets competed tremendously well through a jam-packed day of tough competition! Freshmen Aiden McGivney battled to a 3rd place finish and State Qualification at 106lbs! He finished with a 3-1 record on the day with a pin and two decisions. Derrick Singleton was one match away from qualifying for his second state tournament, coming just short in the consolation semifinals. Keenan Stewart earned his first trip down to state with a 3rd place finish at 132lb! Keenan finished the day with a 3-1 record, his only loss coming in the semifinals to the eventual champion. Elijah Banks took the scenic route through the tournament Saturday, wrestling 5 matches and fighting his way to a 3-2 record. Elijah was also one win away from qualifying for state, but earned a trip downstate as an alternate at 138lb! Senior Easa Aristizabal also finished with a 3-2 record on the day, losing very hard-fought matches to the first and third place finishers. As a result of his finish, Easa was also an alternate for the state tournament, representing the team at 145lb. Julian Kinsey punched his ticket to the state tournament for a second consecutive season with a 3rd place finish at 160lb. He pinned his way to a 3-1 record on the day. Tyler Sally battled to a 2-2 finish on the day, battling some tough competition in one of the deepest weight classes in the tournament. Nick Bortman finished off the day without a victory, but earned a wealth of respect from his team and opponents as a first year wrestler competing in a sectional tournament. Alex Diaz earned his place in the state tournament at 285lbs by avenging a loss from the regional finals! Diaz finish in 4th place to qualify for state for the first time, ending the day with a 3-2 record.
Aiden McGivney, Keenan Stewart, Julian Kinsey, and Alex Diaz will all compete in the IHSA State Tournament from Thursday – Saturday of next week!
Week of January 29th
Varsity The IHSA state series began on Saturday with the regional tournament at Solorio Academy. The Hornets entered the tournament seeking a regional team title for the second time in three seasons. Beginning the day with only 10 competing wrestlers, the team needed huge performances from each athlete in order to earn the title. They did exactly that. In a dominant team performance, the Hornets placed all 10 wrestlers in the top 4 and advanced 9 to the sectional tournament next week! The Hornets won the regional team title to earn a place in the dual team sectional on February 20th. Aiden McGivney, Derrick Singleton, Keenan Stewart and Julian Kinsey all won regional championships, Elijah Banks, Easa Aristizabal, Tyler Sally and Alex Diaz finished in 2nd place, Nick Bortman earned 3rd and Victor Sanchez battled to a 4th place finish.
The Hornets look forward to hosting the individual sectional tournament at Hinsdale South next Friday and Saturday!
Week of January 22nd
Varsity The varsity team competed only once in the last week of the regular season. A Friday night trip to Tinley Park matched the Hornets up with Rich South, Thornridge, and Tinley Park, all teams that the Hornets will see again in two weeks at the sectional tournament!
In the first of three duals, the Hornets took on Rich South. Derrick Singleton wrestled up at 120 and dominated a tough opponent, winning by major decision to start the scoring. Max Cilek, Keenan Stewart, Elijah Banks, Easa Aristizabal, and Alex Diaz all won their matches to finish off a team victory. Diaz wrestled the first of two tough matches on the night, outlasting a very tough opponent from Rich South at heavyweight.
In the next dual, the Hornets matched up with a very short-handed Thornridge team. Nine Hornets won by forfeit to result in a lopsided team score, while Tyler Sally won a decision at 170. Freshmen Victor Sanchez gave a terrific effort even in a loss.
The final dual of the night was against host Tinley Park. The Hornets finished the night very strong as they won all 7 head-to-head matches, giving up team points only on two forfeits. McGivney, Singleton, Stewart, Aristizabal, Julian Kinsey, all finished the night with a 3-0 record, Sally and Sanchez both rounded out great wins to end on a high note. Banks, Cilek, and Hector Quintero also finished with a 3-0 record on the night.
JV The final JV competition of the season was hosted in the Hinsdale South gym. Unofficially the WSC JV tournament, the competition is one of the most difficult of the season. Josh Ririe, Kailor Rogers, Nick Sarangay, Jesse Carrillo, Hector Quintero, Calvin Czapko, and Tyler Hill all competed very well against conference opponents from both the Gold and Silver sides. Quintero put together a series of matches that earned him a conference championship! He won a double overtime match in the semifinal round by a score of 5-4 to advance to the 1st place match. In the championship match he outlasted a very tough opponent to win 1-0!
Many members of the JV team look forward to staying on for the IHSA postseason to help their teammates prepare, and to be part of the sectional dual team!
Freshmen The freshmen also competed in a conference tournament to round out their season. Hari Mohil, Tim Nixon, Anthony Nicosia, Umair Arshad, Alex Bailie, Glen Hogan, and Alex Gonzalez all pushed themselves to a great finish. Alex Gonzalez earned a 3rd place finish at 182, and Glen Hogan battled his way to a conference championship at 145! Glen Hogan was also voted by the conference coaches as the Outstanding Wrestler of the meet for his performance!
Week of January 15th
Varsity Another busy week for the Hornet wrestling team! The team traveled to conference opponent Addison Trail on Thursday night. In a close dual that saw the lead go back and forth, the Hornets ended up losing by 3pts. There were a number of great efforts on the night. Keenan Stewart got the scoring started for the Hornets with a pin at 132, followed by a tough decision win by Easa Aristizabal at 145 in his first match back from an earlier injury. Jeremiah and Julian Kinsey scored big team points in consecutive matches with Jeremiah earning a tech fall at 152 and Julian winning by pin at 160. Tyler Sally also won with a dominant first period pin at 170. Nick Bortman followed up with a solid win by decision at 195. The final points of the night came from another dominant first period pin, this one by Derrick Singleton at 120.
On Friday night the Hornets hosted another conference opponent in Proviso East. In a limited number of matches on all levels, the Hornets took advantage of their chances to compete. Aiden McGivney represented himself very well in a hard-fought loss to a talented opponent at 106. Singleton, Max Cilek, Stewart, Aristizabal, Jeremiah Kinsey, Julian Kinsey, Sally and Erik Nauckunas all earned wins on the night.
On Saturday, the Hornets hosted an unfamiliar opponent in Chicago Hope Academy, as well as a familiar opponent in Nazareth Academy, for a triangular. In the dual against Hope, the varsity team saw match wins from Stewart, Elijah Banks, Aristizabal and McGivney to earn a sounds victory. The dual against Nazareth proved to be a thriller! Each point was crucial as the final team score was tied after the last match. The Hornets won the dual 37-36 on tie-breaker criteria. Each wrestler competed with great intensity in victory and defeat. Highlights included pins by Keenan Stewart, Elijah Banks, Jeremiah Kinsey, as well as a great effort by Max Cilek in the last match of the dual to secure a team win!
JV The JV team competed at Addison Trail on Thursday night, seeing great wins by Kailor Rogers and Tyler Hill. Tyler Hill also earned a win on Friday night in a very short outing for the JV team. On Saturday, Josh Ririe won first place at a sophomore tournament at Lyons Township! Calvin Czapko finished in fourth at the same tournament, competing well in tough matches.
Freshmen At the Addison Trail meet, the freshmen team saw a number of good matches. Umair Arshad earned a tough win, along with Myron Houltram, Hari Mohil and Alex Gonzalez. The freshmen team looks forward to competing this upcoming week in the conference freshmen tournament!
Week of January 8th
Varsity The varsity team competed three times this past week, wrestling 5 duals. The competition was stiff from start to finish and the Hornets were not able to finish off a dual win. Great individual performances were seen by Aiden McGivney, Derrick Singleton and Will Hogan in the DGS dual on Wednesday, earning close wins. Julian Kinsey earned a pin in that dual as well! Against Leyden on Friday, the Hornets lost a close dual despite getting big pins from Josh Ririe, Aiden McGivney and Max Cilek. The dual started out with a dominant tech fall win by Jeremiah Kinsey. In the home triple dual, the varsity team struggled to get consistent wins. In duals against St. Pats, Wheeling and De La Salle, the Hornets competed well in head-to-head matches but gave up a number of forfeits. McGivney, Keenan Stewart, Hector Quintero and Alex Diaz all earned victories on the day, with Diaz going 3-0 in three duals. JV In two conference meets the JV team wrestled a number of competitive matches. Tyler Hill continues to win tough matches. Kailor Rogers and Calvin Czapko also continue to wrestle very well even in some tough losses. Freshmen The freshmen team has seen consistent improvement from many wrestlers! Glen Hogan continues to win matches in dominant and close fashion, Alex Bailie has returned from injury and wrestled tremendously well, Victor Sanchez has been very successful on the freshmen level and has even stepped up to varsity when given the chance, and Tim Nixon is making great strides in his first year!
Week of January 1st
Varsity In the last week of their semester break the varsity team competed only once. On Wednesday the team traveled to Hampshire High School for a quad meet with the host school, Rockford East, and Belvidere. In the first dual against Rockford East, big victories by pin were earned by Jeremiah Kinsey, Julian Kinsey, and Nick Bortman. Aiden McGivney wrestled well in a loss. Their 2nd dual of the meet was against Belvidere. A number of Hornets received forfeit wins, while Keenan Stewart, Jeremiah Kinsey, Nick Bortman, and Alex Diaz all earned victories in their matches.
The final dual of the day was against host Hampshire. The Hornets competed very well, winning 4 of the 5 head-to-head matchups. McGivney, Stewart, Will Hogan, and Jeremiah Kinsey all earned victories, while Calvin Czapko competed well in his first varsity competition of the year! Jeremiah Kinsey owned the standout performance of the week, finishing the quad meet with a perfect 3-0 record!
The Hornets look forward to preparing for a busy week of competition as they return to a regular school schedule next week! JV JV wrestlers traveled with the varsity team to Hampshire on Wednesday. Nick Sarangay earned a well-deserved victory in his only match of the day! Freshmen Glen Hogan continued his success with two wins on the day, and Anthony Flores won one of his two matches. Freshmen The freshmen team traveled to Rich South on Saturday for an individual tournament. Three wrestlers finished in the top three! Alex Bailie wrestled tremendously well in his first competition back from an injury, earning a 3rd place finish. Tim Nixon had a breakout tournament as he earned a 2nd place finish, his highest of the season so far. And Glen Hogan also earned his best finish of the season as he battled his way to a tournament championship!
Week of December 25th
Varsity The varsity wrestling team competed in the Berman Invite at Palatine High School over the first week of winter break. Highlights of the tournament were Aiden McGivney’s 3rd place finish at 106, Derrick Singleton’s 4th place finish at 120, Elijah Banks’ 2-2 record on the day. The varsity team will travel to Hampshire on January 3rd for their only other competition before the start of spring semester. JV The JV team traveled to a Oswego East for a dual team meet on Saturday 30th. The Hornets competed very well in head-to-head matches, with Calvin Czapko (3-1) and Nick Bortman (2-1) earning big wins on the day. Freshmen The freshmen team hosted a individual tournament on Saturday 30th. The Hornets competed well, placing 5 of the 6 athletes competing. Aiden McGivney led the way as he dominated his way to a 1st place finish at 106. Glen Hogan won two impressive matches on his way to a 2nd place finish at 145. Anthony Nicosia, Hari Mohil, and Tim Nixon also earned placing finishes with strong efforts on the day!
Week of December 11th
Varsity The highlight for the varsity team this week was a conference dual win against Willowbrook at home on Thursday night! The Hornets competed with great energy from start to finish, and pulled away from Willowbrook with wins in the last two matches of the dual to seal the win. Aiden McGivney won the first varsity match of his high school career, winning by technical fall. Derrick Singleton, Alex Diaz, Keenan Stewart, Jeremiah Kinsey, and Julian Kinsey all won their matches by fall, while Elijah Banks and Will Hogan won hard-fought decisions!
Over the weekend, the varsity team competed in the Whitlatch Invite at Hinsdale Central. McGivney and Stewart the weekend with 2-2 records, and Jeremiah Kinsey and Diaz each earned 3-2 records. The standout performance of the weekend was Derrick Singleton’s 5th place finish and a 4-2 record! The team looks forward to a week of training and rest during finals before heading to Palatine on Dec. 27th for an individual holiday tournament.
JV In their dual against Willowbrook, the JV team represented themselves very well. Calvin Czapko, Anthony Flores, and Asharif Abbas all earned victories on the night. The JV team combined with the freshmen to fill out a lineup on Saturday for a quad dual meet at Waubonsie Valley. The team performed tremendously well, winning two of their three duals. Josh Ririe, Tyler Hill, and Nick Bortman all competed especially well!
Freshmen The freshmen Hornets were dominant against Willowbrook, winning 6 out of 8 matches and earning all of their wins by fall. Tim Nixon, Glen Hogan, Alex Gonzalez, and Victor Sanchez all earned impressive victories in front of their home crowd! On Saturday, a few freshmen filled in spots on the JV lineup for the Waubonsie Valley quad. Glen Hogan and Victor Sanchez both have very impressive outings and contributed very well to the team effort.
Week of December 4th
Varsity The Hornets continued their dual schedule this week. The first was a conference clash at Morton on Thursday night. Great wins came from Alex Diaz and Derrick Singleton, while Nick Bortman, Josh Ririe and Elijah Banks competed very well in close losses. The highlight of the night, however, can in the last match of the night. Senior Hector Quintero wrestled up a weight class from his usual 145 spot and earned a thrilling 5-4 victory at 152!
On Saturday, the Hornets traveled to Glenbard West to participate in a quad meet against the host team, Naperville North and Andrew. Although being short-handed and giving up a number of forfeit points, the team represented themselves well. Jeremiah Kinsey, Jacob Dahleh and Elijah Banks all earned 2-1 records on the day! The coaching staff was very proud of Derrick Singleton and Alex Diaz, both of whom wrestled very competitive matches against great competition! The Hornets look forward to hosting Willowbrook for their first home conference dual this Thursday night! The varsity team will also compete in a 2-day tournament on Friday and Saturday at Hinsdale Central.
JV The JV team saw some tough competition on Thursday night against Morton. Calvin Czapko won an intense overtime match early in the dual, other great efforts came from Nick Sarangay and Tyler Hill. On Saturday, the JV team traveled to Chicago Hope Academy where they competed in a round-robin style tournament. Each wrestler got three matches within their pool and was awarded a place based on their record. Kailor Rogers-Nichols and Anthony Flores both went undefeated to earn 1st place finishes, while Nick Sarangay and Patrick O’Malley both earned 2nd place awards!
Freshmen The freshmen team was competitive from top to bottom on Thursday night! They saw big wins from Glen Hogan, Alex Gonzalez, Victor Sanchez and Umair Arshad. Great effort was given by Tim Nixon, Hari Mohil, and Anthony Nicosia despite losses.
Week of November 27th
Varsity The varsity team competed twice in their second week, traveling for a dual at Hinsdale Central and hosting the Matozzi Invite. In the dual against Central, the Hornet wrestled tremendously well across all weights! The team won 5 of the 9 bouts, and 4 of those 5 came by fall. Josh Ririe, Derrick Singleton, Max Cilek, and Alex Diaz all earned wins by fall. Jacob Dahleh earned a hard-fought decision while Easa Aristizabal and Steve Farina wrestled well in losses. At the Matozzi Invite, the Hornets entered 11 wrestlers and finished 5h in the team standings. Sophomore Jeremiah Kinsey led the team with a 2nd place finish, pinning his way into the finals before losing a hard-fought 1st place match. Josh Ririe, Jacob Dahleh, and Alex Diaz all earned 3rd place finishes to boost the team points. Max Cilek and Nick Bortman competed especially well in each of their matches despite their final record. The wrestling team looks forward to another busy week as they will travel to their first conference dual of the season next Thursday (7th) at Morton. They will then compete in a quad dual meet at Glenbard West on Saturday.
JV The JV team also competed against Hinsdale Central, earning a 21-15 matchup win. Key victories came from Nick Borthman, Calvin Czapko, Jesse Carrillo, and Erik Nauckunas. The JV team also traveled to Hinsdale Central on Saturday for an invitational. Kevin Krukowski, Jesse Carrillo, and Erik Nauckunas all finished the day with 1-1 records. Coaches were proud of the efforts of Nick Sarangay and Calvin Czapko who competed well despite leaving without a victory.
Freshmen The freshmen team wrestled an exciting dual against Hinsdale Central! The teams traded wins throughout while wrestlers on both teams gave tremendous effort. Notable wins for the Hornets can from Hari Mohil, Umair Arshad, Glen Hogan, and Victor Sanchez. Great efforts were given by Tim Nixon, Myron Houltram, and Anthony Nicosia. On Saturday, the freshmen team traveled to an invitational at Andrew High School. Aiden McGivney, Hari Mohil, Myron Houltram, Glen Hogan, and Victor Sanchez were all rewarded with multiple wins and good finishes. Tim Nixon, Alex Gonzalez and Anthony Nicosia continue to give great effort and improve every day!
Week of November 20th
Varsity The varsity Hornet wrestling team began its 2017-18 season at Lake Forest on Wednesday with a dual tri against Lake Forest and Grayslake North. Both duals ended in defeat for the Hornet, despite the fact that they competed tremendously well. Derrick Singleton, Easa Aristizabal, and Jacob Dahleh all finished the day with a 2-0 record to start their season! Elijah Banks, Steve Farina, and Alex Diaz all added big wins as the team competed a few weights short of a full lineup. The Hornets now have a full week of practice to prepare for a dual at district opponent Hinsdale Central on Nov. 30th! The team looks forward to improving their skill and conditioning everyday in practice!
JV The JV wrestling team traveled with the varsity to Lake Forest to compete in a matchup dual with the host team and Grayslake North. The small group of wrestlers competed well, with Jeremiah Kinsey setting the pace as he powered to a 2-0 record on the day.
In their second competition of the week, the JV team traveled to wrestle Highland Park and Downers Grove North in a tri. Kailor Rogers came out on top in two hard-fought matches to finish the day at 2-0. Also, first year wrestler Nick Bortman began his season very well with two tough matches, splitting 1-1.
Freshmen The Hornet freshmen wrestling team was excited to begin their competitive season on Saturday at Bolingbrook with duals against the host team and Prospect. In their first dual against Prospect, the team saw wins from Hari Mohil, Anthony Nicosia, Glen Hogan, and Victor Sanchez. The second dual saw Hogan finish his day 2-0 with a come-from-behind win, and a number of hard-fought losses from his teammates. The freshmen team is looking forward to adding a few more athletes to the lineup this week, and they are excited to compete against Hinsdale Central next Thursday!
