2016 Girls' Soccer Weekly Highlights

Week of May 9

Varsity
This week the hornets finished out the regular season in a great way! With 3 games and 2 big victories the team is ready for the 2A state playoffs next week. In Tuesday's game against Leyden, the hornets dominated with a 6-0 victory. Kendra Rees jumped in the net and earned a shut-out while both Courtney Cavalli and Erin Alajoki each tallied three goals for double hat-tricks! There were plenty of nice goals and great assists in the conference match.

Unfortunately, the winning streak ended on Thursday at DGN with a 5-0 loss. Maddie Jensen stepped up and played well in the goal however. It was a positive bounce back the following night for the last home game and SENIOR night vs Riverside Brookfield on Friday.

The hornets earned a great 3-0 win and were able to have all seniors start the game for one last time on their home field. The first goal was a beautiful assist pass across the front of the net by Sophia Jorgensen where Courtney Cavalli made a great run to re-direct past the keeper for a sweet senior goal to start the scoring. The second goal was a pass from Courtney to Erin Alajoki who buried the shot. Those two teamed again for the second goal, where Erin found Courtney for her second goal of the game. Maddie Jensen picked up her second shutout of the year in the net as well. The team voted their senior teammates, Madison Cebular and Jean Cote, Beasts of the game as a great honor on senior night. We hope they both bounce back quickly! State playoffs begin Tuesday in Chicago vs Brooks High for the start of Regional play.

Sophomore

Freshman
The Freshman Girls Soccer team finished the season strong with a 2-1 victory over Addison Trail this past Wednesday. After being down 1-0 at halftime, the girls never gave up and fought back scoring in the final ten minutes off of a corner by Allison Mazurek. Ally Timko buried it in the back of the net. The hornets fought to score another goal in the final three minutes by Francesca Markos. Thanks to Brigid LoConte and Keaton Lancaster for their performance in goal! I am so proud of these girls for working so hard and getting that win to end the season!

Week of May 2

Varsity
It was a busy week for the Hornets with a 2-2 record after 4 games in 6 days! On Monday night, the team celebrated Wolfman Night but unfortunately lost to DGS 2-0. On Wednesday, the team combined with the JV for a match at Wheaton Warrenville South for a 6-0 loss. It was better news in the end of the week when the Hornets got a nice conference victory over Morton on Thursday! In the 3-0 victory, Courtney Cavalli picked up two goals and Kendra Rees stepped up as the backup goalkeeper! On Saturday, the team won 2-0 over Montini. Courtney Cavalli struck again on an awesome assist by Maddie Jensen who kicked a huge punt downfield that really surprised the Montini back line! Sophia Jorgensen buried an awesome cross from Erin Alajoki as well in the second half. Overall, the week ended nicely and the hornets are on a two game winning streak and hope for a big week of more wins ahead!

Sophomore

On Monday, the JV team came out and played their best game of the year in honor of Pat Wolf who retired this year after coaching at Hinsdale South for over 25 years.  We played solidly as “Team Wolfman” and scored early on DGS.  They came back to tie it at the beginning of the second half and we stood strong defensively to earn the 1-1 tie.  Shouts to Carly (scored the lone goal) and to Alma (saved numerous goals by coming off her line) for earning players of the match.  Then on Thursday, we played a good Morton squad and lost 2-0.  Kelly and Alma earned players of the match.  Side note - on Saturday, Maddie was moved up to Varsity to play goalkeeper.  She earned an assist off a punt and was named “Beast of the Game” in their win against Montini.
•    2nd v. DGS
•    5th @ Morton

Freshman
The girls Freshman Soccer team had a tough three game week against Morton, Wheaton Warrenville South, and OPRF. The girls played a tough Morton team on Monday. To only lose 1-0 was a great accomplishment when facing a great passing and skillful team. The girls played tough and created lots of opportunities to score, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. We played even better on Wednesday against Wheaton Warrenville South. We created many opportunities to score with shots and passes by Alyssa Timko, Francesca Markos, and Allison Mazurek, to name a few. Again, we couldn’t  score. On Thursday, we played the best of the three teams and played well. Alyssa Timko scored in the first half to make it 1-1 at half time. I was very proud of the efforts of everyone this past week and have really enjoyed seeing such great improvement as we near the end of our season. Cheer us on against York Monday and come support us at our final home game against Addison Trail on Wednesday!

Week of April 25

Varsity

This week the team went 1-2 with two close losses and a huge victory. On Tuesday, the hornets won 7-0 over Proviso East at Home and everyone got involved in the offense on a wet and rainy night! The next two games were a different story however. On Thursday night, although the team battled hard for 80 minutes they fell short of holding a tie to York with a 2-1 loss. Courtney Cavalli scored the lone goal off of a nice pass from her sister, Gina in the second half but York answered with a tough shot in the last 3 minutes for the win. Saturday morning was another cold and rainy game with slippery conditions at Andrew High School. The hornets played tough again but Andrew was able to score one and hold off the hornets for a 1-0 loss on the road. The varsity is now 5-9-1 and ready for a big game vs DGS on Monday!

Sophomore
JV earned a much needed win against Proviso East to start another week of 3 games in four days.  The win was a total team effort.  Next, we faced off against a strong York team and lost 6-0.  We traveled south to Andrew on Saturday and played a good defensive game but lost 2-1.  Big ups to Alma, Katie, Syd, Maddie and Izzy for all being nominated players of the matches this week.
•    27th v. Proviso East
•    28th @ York
•    30th @ Andrew

Freshman

The Freshman Girls soccer team battled hard this past week with three tough games and tough weather conditions. We went down 2-0 to Leydon in the 1st half, but came out strong in the 2nd half with 2 goals to tie the score at 2-2. Ally Timko and Brigid LoConte both put one in for the Hornets. Our defense fought hard and despite some great saves by Keaton Lancaster, we conceded a third goal to lose 3-2. I was most proud of the girls for never giving up in the 80 degree heat, even when we were behind.

Our second game against Lyons Township was a learning experience. We discussed what they did well as a team and immediately got to work on Thursday. We worked on switching the field, and an “up, back, through” passing pattern. I was pleased to see our hard work on Thursday and Friday directly translated to our game against Andrew Saturday morning. After a 0-0 score at halftime, this was the best I have seen the team play all season. We were connecting passes, making runs, and pressuring quickly. Ally Timko finally put one in the net on an assist off of Allison Mazurek. Isabela Reyes and Brigid LoConte made some excellent defensive plays to keep us in the game. Even though the game ended in a 1-1 tie, I was proud of the effort and determination that went into finishing out that game in the freezing rain.

Looking forward to Morton, Wheaton Warrenville South, and a rematch of OPRF this week! Go Hornets!

Week of April 18

Varsity

This week, the Varsity team went 1-1 with a conference win over Addison Trail and a loss to Oswego East. The 7-1 win on Tuesday was a great team effort with many goals and assists including two goals on corner kicks by Courtney Cavalli, both assisted by Alexis Kotsiantos. Dakota Dapkus added a goal of a free kick as well in that game. Unfortunately, that good momentum was cut short by a strong and fast offense from Oswego East on Friday night. The 4-2 loss was a great battle though and the team played it's best all around game this season. Sophia Jorgensen picked up a goal off of an aggressive header play in front of the keeper while Kendra Rees found the back of the net after a break through play near the top of the box. The team is ready for another week of big games including Proviso East, York and Andrew.

Sophomore
The JV squad had another tough week, playing 3 games in four days.   It started with a big loss to our rivals across town at Hinsdale Central.  Then, we battled Willowbrook tough all game but gave up a goal in the last minute to lose 2-1.  We finished the week playing Oswego well but came up short again 2-1.  Big ups to all the players of the week – Alma, Sydney, Marie, Carly, Izzy, Bella, and Hailey.
•    19th @ Hinsdale Central
•    20th v. Willowbrook
•    22nd v. Oswego

Freshman

Girls freshman soccer played 2 games last week. They played very well against a strong Hinsdale Central team and worked together. Tuesday we had a very competitive game against Willowbrook. We went down 1-0 and fought to come back and score with a goal from Francesca Markos to tie it 1-1. I was proud of the girls for not giving up and working hard until the final minutes. Thanks to Keaton Lancaster and Brigid LoConte for their performances in goal!

Week of April 11

Varsity

The varsity was busy with 3 Pepsi Showdown games this week. All games were very close and the team was only able to come away with one win this week going 1-2. Tuesday's game was an exciting victory over Kaneland in overtime where Tess Sobol scored the winning goal off an assist by Kendra Rees for the 1-0 win. Thursday's game was a tough 3-1 loss to Nazareth with a rebound goal by Courtney Cavalli off a nice shot and run by Sophia Jorgensen. On Saturday morning, the team battled against Wheaton Academy but came up short with a 2-1 loss. The team scored their best goal of the year however on a great cross by Kendra Rees, where Courtney Cavalli played a perfectly timed and placed header goal. After a couple of injuries this week, the team will be focused on recovery and finding ways to win more of these close games!

Sophomore
The JV squad had a rough week losing to Downers Grove South on Monday, losing to Glenbard West on Wednesday, and losing to Hinsdale Central on Thursday.   Big ups to Alma and Syd for being named players of the game against Central. The week ended on a really positive note as we helped out during the Special Olympics Soccer tournament that Hinsdale South hosted on Sunday.

Freshman
The freshman girls had a 3 game week last week. We improved as a team exponentially from the first game on Monday to our Friday game against OPRF. The girls played our best game yet on Friday losing 2-1 with a goal from Francesca Markos. Bela Reyes, Brigid LoConte, Keaton Lancaster, Allison Mazurek, and Kiara Garcia all helped on the defensive end to only allow 2 goals Friday. Kate Cvengros and Ally Timko led the offense with some great passes and shots on goal. I'm excite to see what the next game brings! Great work girls!

Week of April 4

Varsity

This week was tough one for the Hornets. After a week without games, the team suffered a 2-1 loss to Willowbrook on Tuesday at home. Madison Cebular scored the lone goal with an assist from fellow defender, Dakota Dapkus. Madison was voted the player of that game as well. The team re-grouped for the start of the Pepsi Showdown on Saturday. With a 6pm game that started late, the freezing cold temps and lack of sunshine made the battle even more tough against Oswego in game one of the Gatorade bracket in the tournament. The Hornets scored first off of a beautiful cross by Erin Alajoki and a missed header the bounced off of the crossbar by Kendra Rees, where Courtney Cavalli cleaned up the rebound and the goalie landed inside of the goal. Unfortunately, the Oswego Panthers answered shortly after and tied the game up off of a cross and header that beat Jean Cote. The entire second half was a battle but Oswego played a great ball through that beat the defense and gave them the 2-1 win. The hornets played very well on defense and awarded the "Beast" of the game award to Sara Cepeda who saved the team on more than one occasion in the game.

Sophomore
The JV squad came out and dominated Willowbrook on Tuesday for our first home win. The players of the match were Kelly, Izzy, and Carly. Shouts to Alma for her first shutout and to Carly for scoring a hat trick. After our big W, we spent the rest of the week training and preparing for a tough stretch ahead.

Freshman

The freshman girls soccer team had a week of crazy weather! The girls did a great job fighting the rain, sleet, snow and wind to improve their soccer skills. With a tough loss on Wednesday to Downers Grove North, the girls bounced back and played great in the first half of Saturday's game against Riverside Brookfield. I was really proud of their progress despite the 2-0 loss. Come support us at home on Monday as we face Downers Grove South in our 4th game of the season!

Week of March 21

Varsity

The hornets had a busy week with four games, including a win, tie and two losses. On Tuesday, the hornets struggled in the last 20 minutes of the Hinsdale Central match and suffered a tough 5-1 loss. Although Erin Alajoki scored first in the second half, the team could not hold the Devils off. The team was excited to head to Quincy over Easter weekend for their first road trip tourney. On Friday, we faced a tough Ladue High from St. Louis and lost 3-1 but the goal was a great shot from Gina Cavalli! On Saturday morning, the hornets faced the hosts, Quincy High and although we out-possessed them, only tied in a scoreless effort. It was Saturday afternoon vs Plainfield Central that the win occurred and the team looked sharp with a 2-1 victory. The goals were scored by Courtney Cavalli and Tess Sobol, both in the first half. The tourney was a great team bonding experience and included 3 exciting games. The hornets are resting and preparing for conference play and the upcoming Pepsi Showdown next week!

Freshman
The Freshman Girls Soccer team earned their first victory on Monday March 21st against Proviso West! The girls started off strong with a goal from Kate Cvengros. Francesca Markos added two more in the first half, and another in the second half. Diamond Tucker and Keaton Lancaster split time in goal, only allowing 1 goal for Proviso. Diamond Tucker added two more goals in the second half to make our victory 6-1. Bela Reyes and Brigid LoConte helped run the defense from the center back positions. Thursday's game was rescheduled for Friday April 15th due to weather. Come out and support us on Wednesday April 6th at Downers Grove North at 4:45. Go Hornets!

Week of March 14

Varsity

The varsity played one game in the first week and it was a great team victory at home! The hornets beat Lincoln Way Central 2-0 on Wednesday with both goals scored in the first half by sophomore forward, Kendra Rees. The first goal was off of a beautiful through ball on the right side by Tess Sobol. Kendra attacked the keeper and tucked in near post. The second goal was off of an assist by Nicole Kilrea and Kendra worked through a crowd to score on the left side. The entire team played composed and connected well to out-possess LWC. The players of the game were Kendra and junior defender, Emily Ofenloch.

Sophomore
The Hornets opened up the season with a 2-2 tie v. LWC. Annie Banks and Sydney Puz each netted a goal. Great team effort.

Freshman
The Freshman Girls Soccer Team had a great week of practice preparing for our first game on Monday March 21st! Diamond Tucker and Keaton Lancaster are stepping up to split time in Goal for our team! The team had a brunch on Saturday where they voted captains Kate Cvengros and Keaton Lancaster, with alternates Allyssa Timko and Erin Sheehan. Come out to support your Hornets Monday at 4:30!
