Varsity This week the Hornets were represented by their top six players at an IHSA sectional competition hosted by Hinsdale Central High School. The team was represented by singles players Peter Alex and Joris Bizys who both went 1-1, the doubles team of Haaris Alvi and Josh Eisenschenk, who also went 1,1, and the doubles team of Rohan Chinwalla and Namit Sambare who took 3rd place after going 3-1 on the weekend. On Thursday of this week both Rohan and Namit will compete at the IHSA State tournament, and are looking to have a special run to cap off an already amazing season! The Hornets ultimately took 2nd place in sectionals behind perennial powerhouse Hinsdale Central, and beating out top area teams of Downers Grove South, Wheaton North, and Glenbard West.
Week of May 9
Varsity This week the boys competed in the conference tournament where they finished 2nd place behind conference rival DGS, and ultimately took 2nd place in conference. Freshman Joris Bizys finished second at 1st singles, junior Jason John finished second at 2nd singles, and junior Nicholas Rodriguez finished second at 3rd singles. Meanwhile, in the doubles Rohan Chinwalla (12) and Namit Sambare (10) took first at 1st doubles, Haaris Alvi (12) and Josh Eisenschenk (10) took first at 2nd doubles, Peter Alex (11) and Amrit Selvaraj (11) took first at 3rd doubles, and Nikhil Karavattuveetil (11) and Zain Rajwany (12) took second at 4th doubles. This week the hornets have a week of practice to gear up for sectionals where they will look to qualify their top singles and doubles players for the state tournament.
JV May 14 - On Saturday, the JV team hosted the West Suburban Conference Gold Division Tennis Tournament. The Hornets were led by Luke Goldthorpe at first singles, Jason Sharma at third singles, Jacob John and Malav Shah at second doubles and Sanjiv Sarma and Steven Gabriel at fourth doubles. These four positions were able to get big wins for the Hornets culminating in conference championships for each position. With these four positions winning, the Hornet JV tennis team was able to earn an outright team conference championship. The Hornets finished the year 13-4 and 6-0 in WSG.
Week of May 2
Varsity A 3rd place finish at the NaperValley 16-team tournament this weekend was just business as usual for the hornets who have seen some great success in the last two weeks. Last week the Hornets beat Morton and Addison Trail 7-0 and then competed at the rain abbreviated Pitchford Tournament going a combined 8-5 amongst 2 singles players and 2 doubles teams. This week they throttled DGN 7-0 and then closed out conference play with a 7-0 win versus Leyden. The past two weekends the Hornets have seen DGS in tournaments, and in both cases have placed higher than them. They look to extend that streak to three weekends in a row as they gear up for the conference tournament on 5/13 and 5/14.
JV May 3 - On Monday, the junior varsity boys tennis team visited Downers Grove North for a West Suburban Conference crossover match. The team was led by Senior Murtaza Safiyuddin who won his match at first singles in straight sets. The match was close but the Hornets dropped a close match to DGN 3-4 after two matches were decided in 3rd sets. The Hornet JV Tennis team is now 12-4-1 5-0 in WSC gold play.
May 4 - On Tuesday, the JV team hosted Leyden for their final West Suburban Gold Conference match of the season. The Hornets were led by Malav Shah and Kyle Heinking at first doubles, Jason Sharma at second singles and Ivo Iliev at third singles. The contest was dominated by the Hornets as they swept the Eagles 7-0. This moves the Hornets to 13-4-1 on the year and 6-0 in conference. The Hornets finished the season undefeated in conference play and will head into the conference tournament in the lead.
May 7 – On Saturday, the Hinsdale South Hornet JV tennis team traveled to Downers Grove South for the DGS Super Sophomore tournament. This tournament features the best sophomores from around the state. Abdul Safiyuddin and Raj Biswas each finished the day at 1-3 after losing close matches to some strong varsity players from Barrington, Loyola and Lockport.
Week of April 25
JV April 26 - On Tuesday, the JV team hosted Morton for their fourth West Suburban Gold Conference match of the season. The Hornets were led by Murtaza Safiyuddin at first singles, Abdul Safiyuddin at second singles and Vishnu Chakroborty and Luke Splingaire at 4th doubles. These three positions were able to get big wins for the Hornets winning in straight sets. The Hornets were able to defeat the mustangs 7-0 as a team. This moves the Hornets to 10-2-1 on the year and 4-0 in conference.
April 28 - On Thursday, the JV team traveled to West Suburban Gold conference member Addison Trail for their fifth conference match. The Hornets were led by Malav Shah and Kyle Heinking at first doubles and Luke Goldthorpe and Sanjiv Sarma at second doubles. These positions were able to defeat the blazers in straight sets. The Hornets were able to defeat the blazers 7-0 as a team. This moves the Hornets to 11-2-1 on the year and 5-0 in conference.
April 30 – On Saturday, the Hinsdale South Hornet JV tennis team traveled to Wheaton Warrenville South for the Tiger Doubles Quad. This quad featured the Hornets getting matches against St. Francis, Wheaton Warrenville South and Lyons Township. In the first matchup, the Hornet JV tennis team was able to beat St. Francis 6-0. In the second match, the Hornets were defeated by Lyons Township 6-0. After the second round, the rains came and the quad was called. The Hornets finished 1-1 on the day and finished in 2nd place at the Wheaton Warrenville South Doubles Quad. The Hornet JV Boys Tennis Team moved to 12-3-1 on the season.
Week of April 18
Varsity This week the boys lost to conference rival Downers Grove South 3-4, but recovered quickly with a 7-0 win over Willowbrook. Over the weekend the boys participated in the Jay Kramer Invite hosted by Hinsdale Central, finishing 5th out of 8 teams (some of the top ones in the state). We had some excellent showings in both the singles and doubles, and it ultimately provided some great experience, while speaking to the strength and depth of our team.
JV April 18 - On Monday, the junior varsity boy’s tennis team visited Plainfield North to play a non-conference match. The team was led by Senior Malav Shah and Junior Kyle Heinking at first doubles who defeated their opponents 6-2, 6-2. The Hornets featured a balanced line-up and were victorious 7-0 as a team. This pushed the JV record to 6-1 on the season.
April 19 - On Tuesday, the JV team hosted their rivals Downers Grove South for the second West Suburban Gold Conference match of the season. The Hornets were led by Luke Goldthorpe at first singles and Steven Gabriel and Prashanth Sarma at 4th doubles. These two positions were able to get big wins for the Hornets. The contest was really close, but the Hornets were able to defeat the mustangs 4-3 as a team. This moves the Hornets to 7-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference.
April 21 - On Tuesday, the JV team traveled to West Suburban Gold conference member Willowbrook for their third conference match. The Hornets were led by Jason Sharma at second singles who defeated a tough opponent 6-2, 7-6 and Ivo Iliev at third singles who came back from losing the first set to win the second and third sets to seal a victory. The Hornets were able to defeat the Warriors 6-1 as a team. This moves the Hornets to 8-1 on the year and 3-0 in conference.
April 23 – On Saturday, the Hinsdale South Hornet JV tennis team traveled to Wheaton Warrenville South for the Tiger Doubles Quad. This quad featured the Hornets getting matches against Waubonsie Valley, Wheaton Warrenville South and Nequa Valley. In the first matchup, the Hornet JV tennis team was able to tie a difficult Waubonsie Valley High school 3-3. In the second match, the Hornets defeated Wheaton Warrenville High School 5-1. The team was led by Murtza and Abdul Safiyuddin at 4th doubles and Luke Goldthorpe and Sanjiv Sarma at 6th doubles. In the final match, the 1-1 Hornets took on 2-0 Nequa Valley High School. In a difficult match, the Hornets lost many close matches and fell to Nequa Valley 7-0. The Hornets finished 1-1-1 on the day and finished in 2nd place at the Wheaton Warrenville South Doubles Quad. The Hornet JV Boys Tennis Team moved to 9-2-1 on the season.
Week of April 11
Varsity This week the boys faced off against Hinsdale Central falling 0-7, and then rebounded with a 7-0 win over Proviso East in their first conference match of the season. They competed in the Lincoln-Way Central tournament this weekend, taking 1st out of 8 teams, with a 5-0 win over Lincoln-Way Central, 3-2 win over Metea Valley, and 5-0 win over Lockport. This week the boys will square off against Plainfield North, and tough conference opponents DGS and Willowbrook before competing in the Jay Kramer Invite hosted by Hinsdale Central this weekend.
JV April 12 - On Tuesday, the junior varsity boys tennis team visited Burns Field Park to play Hinsdale Central for a district clash. The team was led by Senior Luke Goldthorpe who won his first set but fell to the Hinsdale Central first singles player in 3 sets. Ultimately the Hornets fell to the Red Devils 7-0. After two matches, the Hornet JV Tennis team is 1-1.
April 14 - On Thursday, the JV team traveled to Proviso East for the first West Suburban Gold Conference match of the season. The Hornets were led by Murtaza Safiyuddin and Abdoul Safiyuddin who were victorious at 1st and 2nd singles. The contest also saw the first match of the season for team members Steven Gabriel and Stanley Peng who contributed to a Hinsdale South victory 7-0 over the Pirates. This moves the Hornets to 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference.
April 16 – On Saturday, the Hinsdale South Hornet JV tennis team traveled to Downers Grove North for the DGN Trojan Quad. This quad featured the Hornets getting matches against Andrew, Stagg and DGN. In the first matchup, the Hornet JV tennis team was able to defeat Stagg High school 4-1. The only defeat came as the 2nd doubles team of Atteq Rehman and Sanjiv Sarma struggled to get going. In the second match, the Hornets defeated Andrew High School 5-0. The team was led by Luke Goldthorpe at 1st Singles as well as Malav Shah and Kyle Heinking at 1st Doubles. In the final match, the 2-0 Hornets took on the 2-0 Downers Grove North Trojans. In a difficult match, the Hornets prevailed by a 3-2 score. The key wins came from Luke Goldthorpe and Murtaza Safiyuddin at singles and Ateeq Rehman and Sanjiv Sarma at doubles. This win provided Ateeq and Sanjiv a chance to shine after their struggle against Stagg. The Hornets finished 3-0 on the day and were the 2016 DGN Trojan Quad champions. The Hornet JV Boys Tennis Team moved to 5-1 on the season.
Week of April 4
Varsity This week the boys saw limited action because of poor weather conditions, with their only match of the week coming against Riverside Brookfield on Tuesday. The Hornets saw impressive victories at the singles and doubles positions, and won 7-0. Next week the boys run into Hinsdale Central and Proviso West, and also compete in the Lincoln-Way Central Invitational.
JV April 5 - On Tuesday, the junior varsity boys tennis team hosted the Riverside Brookfield JV tennis team. The team was led by Seniors Luke Goldthorpe and Murtaza Safyuddin who quickly defeated the opposition at 1st and 2nd singles. Luke won 6-0, 6-1 and Murtaza won 6-0, 6-0. The team as a whole defeated Riverside-Brookfield 7-0. This was the first match of the year for the JV tennis team so they begin their season 1-0.
April 7 - On thursday, the JV team was set to travel to Lyons Township but the match was cancelled due to the rain. The Hornet JV boys tennis team will travel to Hinsdale Central on Tuesday April 12th to take on the Red Devils.
Week of March 28
Varsity This week the boys headed to the Edwardsville Spring Invitational to take on some of the top teams in the Midwest. Competing in the Champions bracket, the team finished 6th out of 16 teams after beating Belleville West 5-0, losing to New Trier 0-5, beating Lafayette 8-1, and falling to Edwardsville 3-9. They got some excellent experience against some remarkable teams that should pay off huge heading into their conference schedule and beginning duals with sectional opponents. This week the boys will take on Riverside Brookfield, Lyons Township, and host a quad squaring off against Metea Valley, SICP, and University High School (Chicago).
Week of March 21
Varsity This week the boys competed against Argo (W 6-1) and Benet Academy (W 5-2) in their first home matches of the year. It was the first action of the year for Rohan Chinwalla (2-0), Josh Eisenschenk (2-0), and Shiv Patel (1-1). After practice this week the boys will head down to Edwardsville to compete in one of the largest and toughest tournaments in the state, barring state itself, and should look to find more success after starting the season 5-1.
Week of March 14
Varsity This weekend the boys traveled to Troy, Illinois to square off against teams down South in the Knights Invitational for their first matches of the season. The team was seeded sixth out of sixteen teams. In the first round South beat Teutopolis 3-2 with a strong performance from the first doubles team of Jason John and Haaris Alvi. In the second round, South feel to the third seeded Belleville East 2-3, with the decisive match going to a third set tie breaker (8-10). While fighting for fifth place at the point, South downed Triad 3-2 and finished with a strong performance against the first seeded Dunlap winning 3-2 to secure 5th place. Freshman newcomer Jacob John had some great matches at the first and second singles positions, while the doubles team of Nikhil Karavattuveetil and Zain Rajwany posted a 3-1 record on the day. Amrit Selvaraj posted a record of 3-1 bouncing around at 1st singles and 2nd doubles, and Nicholas Rodriguez got his first win of the season at 3rd doubles. Despite battling injury early in the season, two-time state qualifier Peter Alex anchored the team going 4-0 on the day. Next week South hosts Benet Academy, Neuqua Valley, and Argo in a home quad.
