2025 Flag Football Highlights

Week of September 8th

Varsity Recap
It was a mixed week for the Varsity Hornets, who split their two WSC Gold matchups, going 1-1.

Tuesday’s game against Morton featured a revamped offense, with Sloane Kiefer stepping in at quarterback and making several key plays through the air. Kiefer connected with Kennedy Ruff, Melina Plavulj, Autumn Lambke, and Anyla Shanklin to keep the chains moving. Emilija Sinkevicius powered the ground game, setting the Hornets up for a 30-point offensive outburst.

On defense, the Hornets dominated. Leading tackler Briasia Satterfield delivered multiple sacks to hold Morton to just 6 points. Pressure from Tejiyha Jones forced hurried throws, creating turnovers for Dulce Serna and Kiefer to capitalize on.

Thursday night’s home game against Addison Trail turned into a defensive showcase. Ka’miyah Spruill, Zoe Allen, Serna, Kiefer, Satterfield, and Jones all made their presence felt, holding the Blazers to just 7 points. The offense moved the ball effectively with Lilly Davy and Kiefer sharing quarterback duties, finding targets Alex Kuhlman, Sinkevicius, and Shanklin, but ultimately came up just short in the red zone.

Looking Ahead: The Varsity Hornets turn their attention to a big week ahead as they face conference rivals Leyden Eagles and the Proviso Pirates.

JV Recap
The Hornets’ JV squad stayed perfect in conference play this week, going 2-0 against tough WSC Gold opponents.

On Tuesday, the Hornets traveled to face the Morton Mustangs and battled to a hard-fought 8-0 victory. The momentum carried into Thursday night’s game, where they notched a 12-6 win to complete the sweep.

Quarterback Juliana Mekhiel commanded the offense with precision, connecting with Rachel Tolentino, Dayana Fields, and Zayna Anbari for big gains and touchdowns. The defense shined as well, keeping opponents out of the end zone with standout performances from Trinity Garrett, Ta’Khyiah Jackson, and Elise Rogel, who combined for key stops and flag pulls all week.

Looking Ahead: The JV Hornets will look to extend their winning streak Tuesday night when they take on the Leyden Eagles at 5:00 p.m.

Week of August 25th

Hornets Start Season Strong With Wins at Both Levels
The Hornets opened their season with an impressive first week of competition, facing tough non-conference opponents and coming out with strong results. The JV squad stands at 2-1 after three hard-fought contests, while Varsity remains undefeated at 3-0.

Varsity Recap
The Varsity Hornets are off to a perfect start, defeating Oswego East (20-12), Geneva (32-8), and Romeoville (34-26). The Romeoville contest proved to be a battle, but the Hornets held strong to secure the win.

Led by a roster of returning players from last season’s 9-5 squad, Varsity has benefitted from added depth with newcomers Olivia Harding and Sky Herbert at wide receiver. The offense has been dynamic, highlighted by the passing connection between quarterback Callie Carr and receiver Kennedy Ruff. Running back Emilija Sinkevicius has powered the ground game, while center Melina Plavulj has been crucial in securing first downs. Harding and Herbert have also contributed key plays to keep drives alive and finish in the red zone.

Defensively, the Hornets have been dominant. Standouts Zoe Allen, Sloane Kiefer, Briasia Satterfield, Dulce Serna, Karsen Smith, and Tejiyha Jones have set the tone with strong tackling and relentless pressure. Their efforts have limited opponents’ scoring opportunities and helped seal early-season victories.
Looking Ahead

The Hornets now turn their focus to conference play. They’ll face Hinsdale Central on Tuesday, Sept. 2, followed by Lyons Township on Wednesday, Sept. 3, in two pivotal West Suburban Conference matchups.

JV Recap
The JV Hornets dropped their opener to Oswego East, 13-6, but quickly regrouped to earn back-to-back victories. They topped Geneva High School, 12-7, before edging Romeoville, 22-18, in a nail-biter.
First-year head coach Argiropoulos is guiding a roster filled with new talent, and the group is already showing promise. Quarterback Juliana Mekhiel has been a steady leader, making plays through the air and on the ground. Freshman running back Zayna Anbari has added explosiveness with several long runs, while the defense has been a force in clutch situations. April Hardy has intercepted passes in each of the first three games, while defenders Robyn Price, Ta’Khylah Jackson, Nariya Goodman, and Nymereia Harris have all come up with big tackles to keep opponents out of the end zone.
